The field of modern linguistics is beginning to find useful application in biblical studies. One such area is discourse analysis, the study of how language works above the sentence level. With all that is being written these days about theories of studying larger linguistic units, this work is a direct application of one approach to a specific text, the narrative structure of the Gospel of John. When the tools of discourse analysis are employed, the modern day reader can more clearly perceive the plot structure which the author built into his story of Jesus.
