Book Description
"French and Australian collaborative research in the humanities and the social sciences in the South Pacific has grown and intensified significantly over the past two decades, beginning with the international symposium Changing Identities in the Pacific at the Dawn of the Twenty-First Century held at the Australian Embassy in Paris in 1997 ... In April 2006, another French-government sponsored international symposium, AGORA (Ateliers Gouvernance et Recherche Appliquée) was held at IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement), Noumea, New Caledonia, major themes being governance and economic development, again bringing together Francophone and Anglophone scholars from France and the Pacific region. This was followed in October 2009 by two conjoint Francophone/Anglophone conferences, held at the IRD Centre in Noumea, Stability, Security and Development in Oceania, preceded by AGORA-2, an international conference on Anglophone research in the humanities and the social sciences in the Francophone Pacific, sponsored by the French Government and the Government of New Caledonia. The first of these conferences was sponsored by the French Fonds Pacifique and the State, Society and Governance Program at The Australian National University. An edited selection of presentations from this symposium constitutes the present volume."--Preface.

Book Description
These selected papers from National Defense University?s 1990 Pacific Symposium deal with events in a vast area stretching from Japan to New Zealand and from Southeast Asia to the South Pacific islands in a year of momentous change. The apt theme of "change, interdependence, and security" echoes throughout the papers. Two thoughtful considerations of long-term US policy in the region lead off the collection, arguing that the United States needs to maintain the course of its fundamental policy. Successive papers address major issues by country and subregion. For example, one study looks at future relations between China and the great powers after the Tiananmen incident. Other essays raise serious questions about US-Japan security and economic relations into the 21st century, and several specialists examine how the end of the Cold War has raised hopes for stability on the Korean Peninsula and throughout Northeast Asia. Shifting the focus to Southeast Asia, other papers discuss improved prospects for security after a Cambodian settlement, and the outlook for democracy in the Philippines. Rounding out the volume, several authors delve into the security situation in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific islands, as well as US and Soviet strategic interests there. Study of the Pacific - problematical in normal times because of the area?s vastness and diversity - has been further complicated recently by events in Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, and the Persian Gulf. This volume, like its parent symposium, provides a stable forum to continue assessing Pacific security despite increasingly unstable conditions elsewhere in the world. J. A. Baldwin Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy President, National Defense University

Book Description
From the war on terror to the rise of China, this book unlocks the major strategic themes and security challenges of the early twenty-first century. Strategy and Security in the Asia-Pacific provides the analytical frameworks needed to make sense of this complex but exciting strategic universe. Offering a unique mix of global strategic thinking and Asia-Pacific security analysis, this book is for readers from Sydney to Seoul who want to put their own local security challenges in a wider regional and global context. It is also for North American and European readers requiring an understanding of the dynamic security developments in the Asia-Pacific region around which so much of global strategy is increasingly based. The really vital questions facing the international community are dealt with here: Why do governments and groups still use armed force? Has warfare really changed in the information age? Why should we be concerned about non-traditional security challenges such as water shortages and the spread of infectious disease? Is a great clash imminent between the United States and China? What are the prospects for peace on the Korean peninsula and between India and Pakistan? Can Southeast Asia survive the challenges of transnational terrorism? What does security mean for the Pacific island countries and for Australia and New Zealand? With contributions from leading commentators and analysts, Strategy and Security in the Asia-Pacific offers a comprehensive and authoritative introduction to the field.
