Book Description
Seasons in the Sun is the memoir of a college student/athlete in the mid-1970's. Bill Hauser played quarterback at Ohio's Wittenberg University, one of the top small-college football teams in America, and for one of the most successful coaches in the game. This book takes the reader through the ups and downs of competition and the life-lessons learned from that experience. But it is not all about football. The author's enjoyment of music of the period is woven throughout the book with popular songs of the time serving as chapter titles. If you remember the 1970's — the music, the events of the time and the college experience — you should enjoy this book. If you are a fan of college football, particularly small-college football, you likely will enjoy the intimate look at what the game was like in the 70s. Younger readers might also find the contrast in student life today and back in the 70s interesting and amusing. And the lessons learned and training received on the gridiron are as relevant in the present as they were back then.

Book Description
The heart of professional baseball, if not its roots, may be found in the American Midwest, especially in Missouri. In Seasons in the Sun, Roger D. Launius offers an excellent overview of the teams, pennant races, trials, and triumphs of the different major-league teams that have resided in the state over the years. Since 1876, when St. Louis became a charter member of the newly formed National League, there have also been other major-league franchises from less well known leagues in St. Louis. The St. Louis major-league baseball experience is not limited to the extraordinary success and fame of the Cardinals, who have won more World Series championships than any other National League team. St. Louis also claims the excellent but short-lived Brown Stockings, the city's first entry into the National League; the American League's Browns, who spent most of their existence in the first half of the twentieth century at the bottom of the standings; the virtually forgotten Terriers of the Federal League in 1914-1915; and the Maroons of the pre-twentieth-century National League.

Book Description
Michael Garland (Daddy Played the Blues) displays his impressive illustration range with the stylized, country-quilt, digital collage illustrations of A Season of Flowers. Snowdrops and crocuses yield to tulips and hyacinths, then dogwood blossoms, iris, lupine, daisies, morning glories, daylilies, geraniums, peonies, sunflowers, roses, and chrysanthemums as spring passes to summer, then autumn. At last the garden slumbers into winter under a blanket of snow, preparing next year’s procession of blooms. Like actors crossing a stage, flowers narrate the passing seasons in the first person, each one briefly proclaiming its unique and vital role in the natural world. Backmatter descriptions complete this child’s introduction to a garden year, in which the passage of time is vividly realized. Fountas & Pinnell Level L

Book Description
The late 1970s were Britain's years of strife and the good life. They saw inflation, riots, the peak of trade union power - and also the birth of home computers, the rise of the ready meal and the triumph of a Grantham grocer's daughter who would change everything. Dominic Sandbrook re-creates this extraordinary period in all its chaos and contradiction, revealing it as a turning point in our recent history, where, in everything from families and schools to punk and Doctor Who, the future of the nation was being decided. 'A brilliant historian.' A. N. Wilson, Spectator 'Magnificent . . . If you lived through the late Seventies - or, for that matter, even if you didn't - don't miss this book.' Mail on Sunday 'Entertaining, engaging, masterful, a joy . . . as a storyteller, Sandbrook is superb.' Sunday Telegraph 'Sandbrook has rummaged deep into the cultural life of the era to remind us how rich it was, from Bowie to Dennis Potter, Martin Amis to William Golding.' The Times 'While Sandbrook punctures some of our favourite myths . . . what makes this book such a pleasure is the sheer, unashamed nostalgia it evokes.' Daily Telegraph 'Compulsively readable . . . Sandbrook is right to argue that the 1970s was the moment when our century arrived.' Guardian

Book Description
Like virtually every other aspect of American life, baseball was affected by World War II. Many of its players left the playing field for the battlefield, but the game continued, played by those who stayed behind. Wartime baseball entertained a nation in desperate need of a diversion and a morale boost in a time of crisis. This book studies baseball during World War II, with both a statistical analysis of the game and stories of its players--those who went to war and those who did not. It provides recaps for each season between 1942 and 1945, and season-by-season recaps and highlights for each team. Starting lineups of the war years are compared to the starting lineups of 1941 (the last year of peacetime baseball) to show how dramatically the war changed the game. A list of players who went to war is provided, along with a list of players who replaced them on the roster if they were starters or starting pitchers. Brief statistical sketches of players who went to the war discuss their play before and after and how they were replaced. Other lists include wartime players who lost their starting jobs in 1946; minor league players who died in the war; and Negro League players who were drafted.
