Book Description
"Encountering Differences in Antioch of Syria" is the seventh book of "The New Way Series." It is based on the first century manuscript "Acts of the Apostles" written by Luke. We have seen how the New Way might have moved from Jerusalem to both villages and large cities in Galilee, but Luke records that it also began to impact the surrounding countries — countries that had once been considered archenemies of Israel. The city of Antioch was established by Alexander the Great, but when the Romans took control, they desired to make it the capital city of the region. They provided incentives of property, jobs, housing, and religious freedom. As a result, Antioch soon became the third largest city of the Roman Empire and was filled with people from many different nations. Many followers of Jesus and New Way groups relocated to Antioch. They encountered people from all over the known world, and specifically Pharisees from Jerusalem who were intent on destroying the New Way. Once again, I have chosen to imagine what it must have been like for some of the characters who were introduced in Book #1 of the New Way Series to become adults and relocate to Antioch of Syria. They expected to be in the minority. They were prepared to face the misunderstanding of other religions. But they were surprised to discover that some of the hardest battles were keeping the peace with fellow followers. They had to deal with questions, conflicts, and disagreements as the New Way was being forged and strengthened by its battles. These young adults had to determine what they believed, and what they were willing to sacrifice in order to follow those beliefs. What would they give up in order to be obedient to Jehovah? Watch as these young friends of Jesus became adults in a strange land, far from home. And look forward to the final New Way Series Book #8, "Telling the World from Antioch of Syria," where they begin to face the high price of spreading the New Way deeper and deeper into the uttermost parts of the world.

Searching for Jesus
Author: Robert J. Hutchinson
Publisher: HarperChristian + ORM
ISBN: 0718018494
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 383
Book Description
For more than a century, Bible scholars and university researchers have been systematically debunking what ordinary Christians believed about Jesus of Nazareth. But what if the most recent Biblical scholarship actually affirmed the New Testament? What if Jesus was not a Zealot revolutionary, or a Greek Cynic philosopher, or a proto-feminist Gnostic, but precisely what he claimed to be: the divine Son of Man prophesied in the Book of Daniel who gave his life as a ransom for many? What if everything the Gospels say about Jesus of Nazareth—his words, his deeds, his plans—turned out to be true? Searching for Jesus changes “what if?” to “what is,” debunking the debunkers and showing how the latest scholarship supports orthodox Christian belief.

The Household of Jairus; Secrets, Lies & Miracles
Author: Kathy Zamonski
Publisher: Covenant Books, Inc.
ISBN: 164003529X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 151
Book Description
This novel is a rich exploration of two New Testament healings: the bleeding woman who touched the hem of Jesus's garment and the daughter of Jairus the Pharisee. The Gospel of Luke (8:40aEUR"48) sets the miracles on the same day as Jesus and a crowd make their way to the house of Jairus. Could there be a connection between the woman who has bled for twelve years and the twelve-year-old girl who has died? If so, how are they related? What desperation drives the weakened woman to push through the crowd and emboldens her to touch the hem of Jesus? What compels a strict, faithful Pharisee to step outside the confines of his beliefs and risk ridicule and shunning from his neighbors to seek help from a questionable, itinerant rabbi? How does life change for them after the women are healed? This moving story has emerged from the author's knowledge of and reflection on scripture along with careful research into the time and place of the event. Characters come to life as their stories unfold, revealing intimate portraits of life and love in Roman-occupied Capernaum. Ultimately, this is a story of newfound faithaEUR"that of Jairus and the members of his household as their belief in God's love and mercy is tested and transformed through the miracles of Jesus. The author has made every effort to present an accurate account of first-century life in Galilee during the lifetime of Jesus and the early years of Christian conversion that followed His resurrection. Anyone who has struggled with doubt and whose own faith has been tested will be inspired to learn how the members of a single household came to believe in miracles! Seeing for Ourselves
Author: Katerina Katsarka Whitley
Publisher: Church Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 0819225401
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 121
Book Description
In this provocative collection of dramatic monologues, the author gives powerful voice to the New Testament women who met Jesus before and after the Resurrection. There are many powerful women in the Bible, but their descriptions are almost always tantalizingly brief. If they had the chance to tell their own stories in their own voices, what would they have said? Basing her interpretation of these women on extensive research, Katerina Whitley puts herself in their shoes, giving today’s listeners a fuller understanding of each of their stories. The women explored, some well-known and others less familiar, include the Virgin Mary, Miriam, Mary Magdalene, Elizabeth, the Syrophoenician or Canaanite woman, Lydia, Ruth, Martha, Gomer, Michal, Tamar, and Peter’s wife. Each woman speaks for herself in these monologues, in a way that brings the biblical issues and questions into contemporary focus. An introduction to each woman and study questions at the end of each piece make this an ideal book for individuals and groups.
