A sample of 15,252 basic airmen were administered the history opinion inventory (HOI) during basic military training. The service careers of these subjects were monitored for two years in order to assess the ability of the HOI to predict the criterion of in/out of service. An a priori adaptation index developed from HOI items correctly identified as high risk 23 percent of those subjects discharged from service during the two year period, while incorrectly labeling as high risk only 6 percent of those subjects still in service after two years. The possibility of increasing the accuracy of prediction by utilizing biographic/demographic data and the operational usefulness of the HOI are discussed.

The relationships were investigated between age, educational level, and AFQT scores of the 1965 airman accessions and their reenlistment desirability at the completion of their initial tour. The largest percentage of undesirable enlistees was noted in high school non-graduate, Category 4, and 17-year-old groups. Using three categories of variables, it was found that it would be possible to eliminate 34 percent of the undesirables, although 76 percent of the individuals falling in this three category group actually proved to be successful in their military career. It was emphasized that caution should be used in attempting to establish a screening procedure to identify undersirable enlistees since a significant number of potentially qualitied personnel might be excluded at the same time. "A computer adaptive test was administered over the telephone by reading items and response alternatives to 144 individuals who had recently enlisted in the U.S. Army and had completed the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Subject responses were entered into a computer by the telephone interviewer thereby allowing the adaptive test program to estimate aptitude with approximately 10 verbal items. Analyses indicate that the Telephone Test is highly correlated with the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) in the sample we tested, r = .66; the bivariate correction for range restriction estimated this population correlation to be .81. A confirmatory factor analysis produced a four factor solution with the Telephone Test loading at a very high level (.91) on a Verbal factor, which had a substantial loading (.72) on a higher order factor. The magnitude of the factor loadings and the administration time (5 to 10 minutes) indicate that the procedure provides an excellent measure of crystallized Verbal aptitude that can be incorporated into brief telephone interviews and used to estimate AFQT and general aptitude."--DTIC.
