Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

This quantitative, causal-comparative study was designed to investigate the effect of students’ participation in middle school interscholastic sports on their academic success among urban middle school students. The body of knowledge about the effect of participating in sports on academic achievement is comprehensive at the high school and college levels, but limited research has been done regarding sports participation among middle school students. The participants for this study were drawn from a convenience sample of 366 seventh-grade middle school students in eastern Pennsylvania during the 2018-2019 school year; stratified random sampling was also used to create groups with equal male and female participants. There were 108 student scores used for each research question. The independent variable for both research questions was students’ participation in interscholastic sports programs. The dependent variable for both research questions was the students’ scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment for reading and mathematics. The data were archival as student scores on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment were from the 2018-2019 school year. Differences between the two groups were examined by conducting two independent sample t tests. The researcher was unable to reject the null hypotheses for RQ1 and RQ2 and concluded that there was no significant difference in academic achievement demonstrated on Reading and Mathematics PSSA scores between the two groups (i.e. athletes and non-athletes). Recommendations for further research on this topic are to include more participants from multiple schools, require a minimum amount of time for participation in a sport, and use course grades to determine academic success.

This study sought to examine the relations between sports participation, academic achievement, and self-efficacy in high school students. Self-efficacy has been linked to both sports participation and academic achievement, but no study has examined these three variables together. One hundred eleven students from two schools filled out surveys examining their levels of sports participation, academic and athletic self-efficacy, and demographic information. Participating schools provided student GPA information. Results supported the study's first, second, and third hypotheses. Athletes had higher GPAs and academic self-efficacy scores than non-athletes. Additionally, there was evidence for an indirect effect of sports participation on GPA through the mediating variable of academic self-efficacy. Results did not support the study's fourth hypothesis, as there was no significant relation between academic self-efficacy and athletic self-efficacy among athletes in the present study. Results are discussed in relation to the student population and school environment.

This quantitative study was designed to examine whether there was a statistically significant difference in grade point average (GPA) between students who participated in school-sponsored athletic programs and nonparticipants in a Midwest, Catholic high school. Secondarily, this study examined whether there were significant differences in the relationship between athletic participation and GPA based on type of sport (i.e., team sport or individual sport). This study utilized Astin's theory of student involvement, looking at the impact of student involvement on academic achievement. Data analysis was conducted by the researcher using regression analyses. The results of the study indicate that the difference in GPA of athletic participants compared to nonparticipants was found to be statistically significant. After data analysis, neither team sport only participant GPA nor individual and team sport participant GPA were found to be statistically different compared to individual sport only participant GPA. Limitations of this study include demographic representation, socioeconomic representation, location, and by the type of school studied. Based on the results of this study, the researcher concluded that participation in school-sponsored athletics at a Catholic high school is valuable to students. Thusly, schools should not only fund school-sponsored athletics, but school officials should also be committed to policies that increase access to, and encourage participation in, school-sponsored athletic programs.
