This study examines the relationship between public schools in an urban school district and Hispanic/Latino parents with limited or no English proficiency. The data gathered was based on interviews with eighteen (18) Hispanic/Latino parents. The interview questions focuses on parent involvement in their student's school. Specifically, the study raises issues about the existing social, economic and cultural capital in the interaction between the school and the Hispanic/ Latino parents with limited or no English proficiency, and how communication is important for a successful relationship. The following three themes are identified (1) parents indicated that their relationship with the student's school is good because they are treated well by the school staff (2) parents expressed a desire to have more Spanish speaking staff at the school to help understand English (3) parents were not as involved as they would like, due to work and the language barrier. These three themes were compared to existing literature, to investigate what the relationship is like between public schools and Hispanic/Latino parents with limited or no English proficiency. By examining previous and current research, I identified barriers to parent engagement for Hispanic/Latinos to highlight ways these obstacles have successfully been addressed to increase parental involvement and student achievement.

Abstract: Latino immigrant families are a population facing great risks which can severely impact their overall well-being. Evidence suggests that parent education and social support programs are an effective way for decreasing some of those risks. The purpose of this project was to identify a potential parenting program, seek potential funding sources to implement such program, and write a grant to fund the parenting program for Aurora Elementary School in the city of Los Angeles, California. The Strengthening Families Program was chosen after revision of best practices in parenting programs for Latino families found in the literature. The program is designed as a group with parenting education, social support, substance use prevention, and parent-child interaction components. The Joseph Drown Foundation was identified as the potential funding source. Social Work implications are discussed. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of this project.

Collaborating with parents to establish a better home-school connection is tantamount to academic success. Teachers and administrators often search for effective ways to involve parents in their children's education. Venues, such as workshops, can provide an excellent opportunity for parents and teachers to interact in a positive manner. The purpose of this project was to determine whether or not using Parents' Workshops could increase parental collaboration and promote a better home-school connection. This project focused on improving collaboration with Latino families to develop more positive communication between parents and educators during their child's academic years. Furthermore, it aimed to show how Latino parents could be taught to help their children to achieve academic success. The workshops were designed to teach Spanish-speaking Latino families how to help their child with Literacy tasks at home. The parents completed questionnaires and the information provided was analyzed to help improve future workshops. The workshops created a place where parents and children could interact with the teacher while learning about Literacy strategies. The importance of parental involvement in their child's academic success became evident throughout the series of workshops. This project shows the benefits that can be obtained when schools collaborate with Spanish-speaking Latino parents to make a better home-school connection. This study explored the support that Spanish-speaking families need from schools to help their children develop literacy. Two initial focus groups were held with Latino parents from the school. Based on the results of the groups, a Spanish reading night was held in which the parents learned a reading strategy that they could carry out while reading to their children in Spanish. The event was evaluated through a questionnaire and a follow-up focus group. The study found that the parents thought the Spanish reading night was beneficial and they were able to participate in the presented activities at home with their children.
