Book Description
Recent decades have witnessed much scholarly reassessment of late-sixteenth through eighteenth-century Reformed theology. It was common to view the theology of this period-typically labelled 'orthodoxy'-as sterile, speculative, and rationalistic, and to represent it as significantly discontinuous with the more humanistic, practical, and biblical thought of the early reformers. Recent scholars have taken a more balanced approach, examining orthodoxy on its own terms and subsequently highlighting points of continuity between orthodoxy and both Reformation and pre-Reformation theologies, in terms of form as well as content. Until now Scottish theology and theologians have figured relatively minimally in works reassessing orthodoxy, and thus many of the older stereotypes concerning post-Reformation Reformed theology in a Scottish context persist. This collection of essays aims to redress that failure by purposely examining post-Reformation Scottish theology/theologians through a lens provided by the gains made in recent scholarly evaluations of Reformed orthodoxy, and by highlighting, in that process, the significant contribution which Scottish divines of the orthodox era made to Reformed theology as an international intellectual phenomenon.

Book Description
In 1932 there appeared the work of SCHMORL and JUNGHANNS, Die gesunde und kranke Wirbelsiiule im Rontgenbild, which laid the foundations of diagnostic radiology of the spine. Since that time the discipline has been extended and refined in a systematic manner and our knowledge has been greatly enriched by the large number of monographs in which leading experts have assembled additional data. An encyclopedic treatment of all that is currently known requires not only that reference be made to all work published since 1932 in order to reveal the problems that remain but also that a serious attempt be made to contribute to the solution of such problems. For this reason, Professor TONDURY and Professor THEILER of Zurich, who know more than anyone else about the ontogeny of the spine, have been invited to display their erudition in this field. Should contra dictions or divergent opinions on certain points be revealed through this confrontation with radiologically obtained findings, so much the better; the effect of this could only be to spur workers in both disciplines on to more advanced research. We have only to recall how in Goethe's time the premaxilla was still the subject of controversy, yet this great man pursuing his studies in comparative anatomy and anthropology was able to prove its existence beyond all doubt. Book Description
This is a study on Reformed theological debates during the »Long Eighteenth Century« in Britain and New England. By »Long« a period that goes beyond 1700–1799 is in view. This examination begins just before the eighteenth century by looking at the Neonomian-Antinomian debate in the 1690s. This is followed by the Marrow Controversy in Scotland in the eighteenth century. After that, the authors address the ecclesiological debates between George Whitefield and the Erskines. The doctrine of free choice concerning Edwards and his departure from classical Reformed orthodoxy is highlighted next, followed by reflections on the Edwardseans and the atonement. Returning to Britain again, the volume provides a study on hyper-Calvinism, and on eschatological differences among key figures in the eighteenth century. More specific debates in particular Baptist circles are noted, including the battle over Sandemandianism and the Trinitarian battles fought by Andrew Fuller and others. Returning to ecclesiology, a discussion on the subscription controversy in Philadelphia in the early eighteenth century and an analysis of the debate about the nature of »revival« in New England close this volume.

Book Description
Scotland has long been known for its emphasis upon an educated clergy, yet little serious historical attention has been given to how this was actually fostered. This book begins to fill that gap. While a thoroughly historical study in Scottish church history and historical theology, the book also serves as a springboard for reflection and application to the work of theological education today with the evangelical Presbyterian and Reformed community.
