Study of passive dispersion of a neutral scalar in turbulentflows is highly important due to its numerous applications in the areas of turbulent flow visualization, turbulent heat transfer and transport of pollutants and other substances in the environment. Over the past few decades, many analytical, numerical, and experimental studies have been conducted on this topic to obtain a better understanding of the physical process. In the present work, Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of scalar dispersion in turbulent flow over smooth and rough channels is conducted to contribute to the further understanding of the relation between the turbulent velocity field and the concentration field. The LES results from the present work showed good agreement with a recently com-pleted experimental study(Rahman and Webster [2005]). An in-depth comparison of in-stantaneous concentration and velocity fields revealed thecorrelation between scalar dis-persion and coherent structures of the turbulent flow. Also, a three dimensional visual-ization of concentration iso-surfaces at different instants provided a good picture of the concentration structures transported as a result of hairpin vortices of turbulent flow, which is quite difficult to accomplish using experimental studies.

The dispersion of a scalar quantity from point sources located in a Direct Numerical Simulation of turbulent channel flow is studied. An algorithm for tracking fluid particles or molecular (or thermal) markers is developed and tested. Accurate estimates of a number of Lagrangian characteristics of the flow, necessary for the description of the diffusion process, are reported for the case of a point source in the center of the channel. The consequences of molecular diffusivity on the effectiveness of the turbulence to disperse a foreign substance (or heat) are also explored. A new method is proposed for calculating the effect of Peclet number on the Lagrangian property autocorrelation in isotropic turbulence. Computed property autocorrelations, from a simulated experiment of point source diffusion in the center of the channel, are also reported. Finally, results for the diffusion from point sources located at the channel walls are presented and discussed.

The importance of large-scale (or coherent) structure to optical propagation through turbulent shear flow has been demonstrated. Direct simulations of low-Reynolds-number flows which include a passive scalar as well as experimental data have been examined. A passive scalar in the simulations is related to refractive-index fluctuations, while a heated jet was used in the experiment large fluctuations associated with large-scale turbulent structure produce a majority of the optical phase error. A low-order dynamical model for the near-wall region of a turbulent channel flow was developed. These predictions illustrate the importance of the dynamics of the turbulent shear flow to optical phase error. Techniques to use limited data to estimate the effect of large-scale structure upon optical propagation were developed. A round turbulent jet was also studied using a large eddy simulation as well as experimental data. Temperature at several locations and jitter in an optical beam propagated through the flow can be measured simultaneously in an experimental facility constructed at the Air Force Phillips Laboratory. A low-dimensional dynamical model for the round jet with passive scalar to be developed in subsequent work will be compared with this experimental data.

We show that the return to isotropy of the small scales is never perfectly observed in any region of the channel for the downstream distances studied herein. However, thesmall-scale anisotropy measured in the central region is smaller than the persistent anisotropy observed in the near-wall region, which is found to be most prominent in the numerical simulations, which are performed at a lower Reynolds number than the experiments. The mean velocity gradient plays a key role in the evolution of the rate of dissipation and in this lack of isotropization of the small scales of the scalar field. " --
