Book Description
Commercial satellite activities have undergone enormous growth in the last decades, and so has the complexity of the legal framework within which these activities have to be carried out. Because of the international character of satellite activities, this legal framework has often been established on an international or regional level, through institutions such as the European Union, the International Telecommunications Union, the World Trade Organisation and the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations. It is not an easy task to obtain a complete picture of this legal framework. For this reason, it was considered opportune to assemble all relevant legal texts and materials established by these institutions into one book. As telecommunications is currently the most important commercial application of satellites, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the main part of the book is dedicated to this application, simply because of the fact that the legal framework is furthest developed. However, relevant texts and materials for the three other commercial satellite activities - broadcasting, remote sensing and navigation - have also been included. This book is a very valuable tool for all those involved in the European satellite business or for those who want to get involved in it, whether they are lawyers or non-lawyers; everyone is affected by the laws and regulations governing this field and everyone should be aware of the limitations these laws and regulations might impose.

Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites on the Moon
Author: Annette Froehlich
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030384039
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 150
Book Description
This book provides an extensive overview of the protection of cultural heritages sites on the Moon (humanity’s lunar heritage) and the various threats they face. First of all, the international legal framework, especially the relevant space treaties are analyzed in terms of how they protect cultural heritages sites on the Moon. In turn, the book explores key aspects like the application of customary law, the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, or the Underwater Convention, and the possibility of adding these sites to UNESCO’s World Heritage list. The book subsequently addresses the question of how to define culture heritage sites or artifacts, in particular in view of the “Outstanding Universal Value” criterion, which is a vital aspect in order to differentiate them from space garbage or even space threats. Lastly, the book proposes and elaborates on various protection systems and multilateral protection regulations. Especially now, 50 years after the first human landing on the Moon, the book is a timely publication that will be of interest to all scholars and professionals working in the space field.

Global Space Governance: An International Study
Author: Ram S. Jakhu
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319543644
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 784
Book Description
This book is based on the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the Global Space Governance study commissioned by the 2014 Montreal Declaration that called upon civil society, academics, governments, the private sector, and other stakeholders to undertake an international interdisciplinary study. The study took three years to complete. It examines the drivers of space regulations and standards, key regulatory problems, and especially addresses possible improvements in global space governance. The world's leading experts led the drafting of chapters, with input from academics and knowledgeable professionals in the public and private sectors, intergovernmental organizations, and nongovernmental organizations from all the regions of the world with over 80 total participants. This book and areas identified for priority action are to be presented to the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and it is hoped will be considered directly or indirectly at the UNISPACE+50 event in Vienna, Austria, in 2018. The report, a collective work of all the contributors, includes objective analysis and frank statements expressed without pressure of political, national, and occupational concerns or interest. It is peer-reviewed and carefully edited to ensure its accuracy, preciseness, and readability. It is expected that the study and derivative recommendations will form the basis for deliberations and decisions at international conferences and meetings around the world on the theme of global space governance. This will hopefully include future discussion at the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

Intellectual Property Rights
Author: Nikolaus Thumm
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662121018
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 169
Book Description
This book is the result of the PhD project I started four years ago at Europa-Kolleg Hamburg. I had the great opportunity to work on it for one year at the European University Institute in Florence and to finalise the oeuvre during my stay with the European Commission's Institute for Prospective Technological Studies in Seville. The subject matter of the book is intellectual property rights, patents in particular, and their process of harmonisation in Europe. At the beginning of the work, the intention was not to focus immediately on one narrow field in the huge realm of intellectual property rights but rather to open my mind in order to capture a broad variety of new ideas and concepts in the book. The work at three different institutes in three different European countries over the period of four years naturally exposed the work to diverging ideas and the exchange of views with many people. This is one reason for the wide spread of topics ordered around the given leitmotif, such as epistemological foundations, political background information,. the protection of biotechnological inventions and the building up process of intellectual property right systems in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In chapter two I take up Polanyi's differentiation of codifiable and tacit knowledge. Applying these concepts to my own work I realise that this book is only the visible and codified part of knowledge I was able to capture.
