Book Description
A major new urban history of the design and development of postwar San Francisco Designing San Francisco is the untold story of the formative postwar decades when U.S. cities took their modern shape amid clashing visions of the future. In this pathbreaking and richly illustrated book, Alison Isenberg shifts the focus from architects and city planners—those most often hailed in histories of urban development and design—to the unsung artists, activists, and others who played pivotal roles in rebuilding San Francisco between the 1940s and the 1970s. Previous accounts of midcentury urban renewal have focused on the opposing terms set down by Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs—put simply, development versus preservation—and have followed New York City models. Now Isenberg turns our attention west to colorful, pioneering, and contentious San Francisco, where unexpectedly fierce battles were waged over iconic private and public projects like Ghirardelli Square, Golden Gateway, and the Transamerica Pyramid. When large-scale redevelopment came to low-rise San Francisco in the 1950s, the resulting rivalries and conflicts sparked the proliferation of numerous allied arts fields and their professionals, including architectural model makers, real estate publicists, graphic designers, photographers, property managers, builders, sculptors, public-interest lawyers, alternative press writers, and preservationists. Isenberg explores how these centrally engaged arts professionals brought new ideas to city, regional, and national planning and shaped novel projects across urban, suburban, and rural borders. San Francisco’s rebuilding galvanized far-reaching critiques of the inequitable competition for scarce urban land, and propelled debates over responsible public land stewardship. Isenberg challenges many truisms of this renewal era—especially the presumed male domination of postwar urban design, showing how women collaborated in city building long before feminism’s impact in the 1970s. An evocative portrait of one of the world’s great cities, Designing San Francisco provides a new paradigm for understanding past and present struggles to define the urban future.

Book Description
Renowned artist and design legend Malcolm Grear has permanently shaped the design world with his work, lecturing, writing and teaching. Grear approaches design by looking at the inner parts of an object, process, or idea in order to understand the whole. He believes that form and structure are the underpinnings of effective design, which stands contrary to the reductive approach taught in most modern design education. Deftly and sparingly capturing the essence of his subject matter, Grear offers unique insight into the design process with images and forms drawn from nature, typography, art and design. These examples from both his teaching (inside) and professional practice (outside) begin with design problems and illuminate the processes by which the best solutions are found. Grear skillfully bridges the gap between design theory and real-world practice. Malcolm Grear has played a vital role as designer and educator in the field of visual communication for 48 years. Malcolm Grear Designers was founded in 1960 and has had more than 28 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries. He taught in Rhode Island School of Design from 1960 to 1998 where he received the Honorary Alumnus Award for ..".professional achievements as an internationally acclaimed graphic designer (that) brought overwhelming recognition to Rhode Island School of Design's Department of Graphic Design and its graduates." Malcolm Grear has been awarded five honorary doctorate degrees and was selected by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, comprising 190 institutions, to receive the Citation for Distinguished Service in the Visual Arts. Grear continues to design, lecture, and conduct design workshops throughout the country and will occasionally teach a graduate design course. Visit www.mgrear.com for more information. "Inside / Outside "is an AIGA Design Press book, published under Peachpit's New Riders imprint in partnership with AIGA.

Book Description
According to the cliche, California is the place where anything goes and everyone does their own thing. Maybe that's because everyone knows that in California there's no terra firma: earthquakes, mudslides, fires, and the occasional civil uprising cause constant upheaval and change. It is also legendary as fertile ground for creativity, freedom, and social consciousness, where the status quo undergoes constant renovation. This book is the first to capture the enormous body of distinctive and visually ecstatic graphic design that emanated from this great state throughout most of the twentieth century. Edited and designed by graphic designer Louise Sandhaus, this raucous gathering of smart, offbeat, groundbreaking graphic design from the Left Coast will amaze readers with its breadth and richness.

Book Description
For many designers, creating things by hand is a reaction to too much computer-based design. Since the first Fingerprint was published, ideas that were once on the fringe have begun to thrive in the mainstream. From typography and illustration to book-making and film titles, elements of handcraft have soaked into everyday life. Fingerprint No. 2 reflects the evolution of those ideas. In this second volume, you’ll still find plenty of projects created entirely without the aid of computer technology. But you’ll also discover how designers are beginning to incorporate the two aesthetics—handmade and digital—in order to best communicate their message. A third, hybrid aesthetic is emerging, one that marries the technologies of the past and future into a vibrant, exciting present. Look inside to discover 133 projects and exclusive visual essays from leading designers, including Robynne Raye, Stefan Bucher and Christian Helms. These pieces of work prove that handmade elements are not only vital to excellent design, but often result in exceptional design. Listen for the pulse, which cannot be faked, forged, or falsified. Look for the finger print. It is the key to design’s success.
