Book Description
A new approach to safety, based on systems thinking, that is more effective, less costly, and easier to use than current techniques. Engineering has experienced a technological revolution, but the basic engineering techniques applied in safety and reliability engineering, created in a simpler, analog world, have changed very little over the years. In this groundbreaking book, Nancy Leveson proposes a new approach to safety—more suited to today's complex, sociotechnical, software-intensive world—based on modern systems thinking and systems theory. Revisiting and updating ideas pioneered by 1950s aerospace engineers in their System Safety concept, and testing her new model extensively on real-world examples, Leveson has created a new approach to safety that is more effective, less expensive, and easier to use than current techniques. Arguing that traditional models of causality are inadequate, Leveson presents a new, extended model of causation (Systems-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes, or STAMP), then shows how the new model can be used to create techniques for system safety engineering, including accident analysis, hazard analysis, system design, safety in operations, and management of safety-critical systems. She applies the new techniques to real-world events including the friendly-fire loss of a U.S. Blackhawk helicopter in the first Gulf War; the Vioxx recall; the U.S. Navy SUBSAFE program; and the bacterial contamination of a public water supply in a Canadian town. Leveson's approach is relevant even beyond safety engineering, offering techniques for “reengineering” any large sociotechnical system to improve safety and manage risk.

Book Description
The third edition of Safety Engineering: Principles and Practices has been thoroughly revised, updated, and expanded. It provides practical information for students and professionals who want an overview of the fundamentals and insight into the subtleties of this expanding discipline.Although this book primarily serves as a textbook, managers and technical personnel will find it a useful reference in dealing with complex safety matters and in planning worker training. This edition includes topics such as identifying regulatory requirements, handling contemporary problem that affect the modern worker, complying with record-keeping requirements, and much more. Many courses and curriculum focus on purely theoretical and scientific aspects of safety and related topics. Often, these students are lacking the fundamental concepts and principles that are required in the real world. Safety Engineering: Principles and Practices helps bridge the gap between what is typically taught and what is truly needed.

Book Description
This book is dedicated to all road users, highlighting their responsibility to do everything to protect their own safety and that of others. It is also dedicated to all road designers to do everything in their power to adapt the system to the opportunities and constraints of road users. At this moment in time, this book is needed to affirm the role and importance of the coordination and sharing of responsibilities at all levels of road traffic safety management, from global, regional, national, to local levels. Its key finding is that vertical coordination should be two-way: from global to local and from local to global, in both reflection and action. The book shows that, at the researched levels of organization the EU, Great Britain and Montenegro, it is possible achieve the goal of zero deaths in road traffic accidents by 2050.

Book Description
Comprised of the papers presented at the eighth, and latest, International Conference Simulation in Risk Analysis and Hazard Mitigation, this book covers a topic of increasing importance. Scientific knowledge is essential to our better understanding of risk. Natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, fires and others, have always affected human societies. Man-made hazards, however, played a comparatively small role until the industrial revolution when the risk of catastrophic events started to increase due to the rapid growth of new technologies and the urbanisation of populations. The interaction of natural and anthropogenic risks adds to the complexity of the problem.Due to advances in computational methods and the ability to model systems more precisely we can now quantify hazards, simulate their effects and calculate risk with greater accuracy, enabling us to manage risk much more effectively. These developments are particularly relevant to environmental issues, where substantial risks are involved. Governments, and their publics, now place a high priority on effective risk management and the mitigation of possible hazards. Covering topics such as: Estimation of Risk; Risk Management; Vulnerability; Geomorphologic Risk; Network Systems; Climate Change Risks; Hazard Prevention; Management and Control; Security and Public Safety; Transportation Safety; Safe Ship Operations; Early Warning Systems; Food Safety; Risk Perception; Natural Hazards; Technological Risk, the book will be of interest to planners, emergency managers, environmentalists, engineers, policy makers and other government officials, researchers and academics involved in the field of risk and disaster management.

Book Description
Safety Professionals know that the best solution to preventing accidents in the workplace boils down to engineering out the hazards. If there isn't any hazard or exposure, there can't be any accident. If you accept the premise that the ultimate method for protecting workers on the job requires the removal or engineering-out of hazards in the workplace, this text is for you. The Handbook of Safety Engineering: Principles and Applications provides instruction in basic engineering principles, the sciences, cyber operations, math operations, mechanics, fire science (water hydraulics, etc.), electrical safety, and the technical and administrative aspects of the safety profession in an accessible and straightforward way. It serves students of safety and practitioners in the field_especially those studying for professional certification examinations_by placing more emphasis on engineering aspects and less on regulatory and administrative requirements. This practical handbook will serve as an important reference guide for students, professors, industrial hygienists, senior level undergraduate and graduate students in safety and industrial engineering, science and engineering professionals, safety researchers, engineering designers, human factor specialists, and all other safety practitioners.

Book Description
Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) consist of software-controlled computing devices communicating with each other and interacting with the physical world through sensors and actuators. Because most of the functionality of a CPS is implemented in software, the software is of crucial importance for the safety and security of the CPS. This book presents principle-based engineering for the development and operation of dependable software. The knowledge in this book addresses organizations that want to strengthen their methodologies to build safe and secure software for mission-critical cyber-physical systems. The book: • Presents a successful strategy for the management of vulnerabilities, threats, and failures in mission-critical cyber-physical systems; • Offers deep practical insight into principle-based software development (62 principles are introduced and cataloged into five categories: Business & organization, general principles, safety, security, and risk management principles); • Provides direct guidance on architecting and operating dependable cyber-physical systems for software managers and architects.
