Book Description
Oils. Painting in Oil. What an incredible thing this is! From the first time I picked up a paintbrush and dabbled in oil paint, I was hooked. The beautiful colours of the pigments that came from the tubes had a creamy nature and seemed so delightfully malleable for mixing and blending together. What a thrill to create new or secondary hues, to vary the values from lighter to darker, to adjust the intensity from high to lowering it to a very grayish pale tone. There is such a beauty in lifting these pigments from the pallet by means of my brushes and laying them down on the canvas or panel to push them around and see just what I can accomplish. The lovely nature of the paint, the scent of the medium used to achieve the desired consistency and the thinner or turps used as additives as well as for cleaning the brushes, all enhancing the sensory experience of the work. I'm so totally fascinated by the range and scope of styles and techniques I see other artists employ on their quest to explore and develop their own expression through the medium. Oils have been applied everywhere from thin and washy to thick and gooey, from very bold abstract to photo-real accuracy, from looser wilder brush strokes to tight and delicately blended and controlled nuances. Artists have employed techniques from direct painting to underpainting, covered over with layers of further refinement and glazing. There is painting on textured surfaces, metallic leaf, even beads and glitter and other additives to the paint, just about anything imaginable. As we move forward to explore the work of the artists here displayed, I hope you will find delight in seeing that range and wonder of their journey in painting in oil.John TatantolaArtists included in this Themes book are: 1. Book Description
Portraits, meaning the focus painting /photograph is usually the person's face, although the entire body and background or context maybe included. The intent is to display likeness, personality and even the mood of the person. It can be a painting, a sketch, a drawing and nowadays, photographs. Portrait artists have played a vital role through history. Before photographs, portraits were the only visual means of capturing a likeness and preserving it for future generations. Portrait artists were people of status like a monarch or the church or people whose family were rich and powerful. Many poor artists would capture the people of the time. We have detailed representation of the style of the era and fashion and hairstyles. Whole families would make it an important event to have their images captured by the artist. A comparison can be made by examining British, French, Italian and Spanish artists to name a few. And when comparing the two old masters Rembrandt and Frans Hals, noticeable connections can be made in their limited palettes and earth tones. However the individual styles are instantly recognisable. Today too, portrait artists have their own styles. Methods for producing portraiture may have changed through the ages and photographs have been included in the mix. But we depict the era we live in by our styles and culture. Debates on whether we still need portrait artists when we have cameras or whether realism has a place in art anymore will carry on. But both offer great and differing skills, and with each painter/photographer, the artist's style and temperament is guided through expression, craft and through the light and tones. Skills should never be left to die or be forgotten, but should be allowed to progress and with each generation we, like the old masters, should leave behind a memory in what ever medium. Whether on canvas or by a photograph of our era and how we live today, we artists deserve our place in history for our dedication and love of the studies that we make of people. Tina Francis. Book Description
Having spent the last sixteen years involved in the art world and painting in acrylics, I am delighted and honoured to write the forward for the Sachet Mixte Themes Edition Nine - Acrylics, and to have my work featured along with fourteen other artists in this latest edition. I first noticed Sachet Mixte books a couple of years ago when introduced to a copy by a friend at an art exhibition I was involved with. I was taken by the diverse nature of the artists' work and the wonderful format and quality of the images featured in the journal. In this printed format it is a great way for your artwork to get recognition, exposure and acknowledgment. This, along with the Sachet Mixte website, gives artists and art enthusiasts a great opportunity to observe contemporary artwork in an easy and accessible format. This month's edition highlights various artists working in acrylics. Those who work with acrylic or are interested in this medium will find this edition beneficial. The paintings chosen to be included demonstrate the various techniques utilised and the textures that can be achieved by working in this medium. The high quality prints offer a valuable visual source in which to study acrylic paintings. Using acrylic can be a rewarding experience for the artist as it is a great type of paint to work with. It is the most versatile of paints to use on canvas, paper, wood etc and looking at a finished acrylic piece it can sometimes look like watercolour work or even oils, depending on the techniques used by the artist. I myself prefer to work on canvas and canvas boards as this lends itself to my style of work. I met the editor of this book Simon O'Corra through social media and I have been a member of the Sachet Mixed Community on Facebook since last year. This Facebook page is useful for the artists and enthusiasts to gain access to other like-minded people and interact with the art community. This book is valuable as it is a great source for artists as it provides inspiration and shows examples of artists' work for people to perfect their technique and gain a greater insight into the art world. It looks to promote new up-and-coming artists as well as to show the development of more experienced well-known members of the art community. This is a very unique publication and comes in various volumes; for example one highlights work by female artists and the other by male artists. It regularly represents both sexes equally in the art world and also has volumes that focus on certain aspects of art. For example this edition focuses on acrylics while others focus on portraits, landscapes and photography. This allows artists interested in specific subjects, easier and direct examples of what they are interested in and it offers inspiration to those working in these various diverse creative fields. I can highly recommend this book for the valuable resources it provides. Alan Glasgow Artist at Alan Glasgow Art Edinburgh Artists include: 1. Dan Simoneau - USA. 2. Madan Lal - India. 3. Book Description
In the late eighties large-scale control operations were carried out to control a major desert locust upsurge in Africa. For the first time since the banning of organochlorine pesticides these operations relied mainly on non-persistent pesticides such as organophosphates and pyrethroids. The amount of pesticides sprayed and the area covered were probably the highest in the history of locust control and raised criticism with respect to efficacy, economic viability and environmental impact. As a consequence, applied research into the problem was intensified, both at the national and the international level, with the goal of finding new and environmentally sound approaches and solutions to locust and grasshopper control. Emphasis was laid on developing new control agents and techniques.
