Effects of a Restoration Project on Total Phosphorus Loading and Concentrations in Sacheen Lake, Washington
Author: Kelly Pittman
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Sacheen Lake (Wash.)
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
"A two-phase diagonstic/feasibility and restoration project began at Sacheen Lake, Washington in February, 1990. Phase I determined that the lake was phosphorus limited and a phosphorus budget was developed. Phosphorus loading needed to be reduced by approximately 100 kg per year from 1990/1991 levels to achieve mid-mesotrophy. External loading from surface tributaries and shoreline wastewater leachate were targeted for reduction as they were the largest contributors of phosphorus during the study. Internal phosphorus loading was also targeted for reduction. During Phase II, the herbicide SonarĀ® was applied to the lake during the spring and summer of 1995 to eradicate Myriophyllum spicatum Guad., a macrophyte contributing large amounts of phosphorus to the water column. The findings of this investigation showed that, following treatment, annual macrophyte phosphorus release decreased from 13.38 kg in 1990/1991 to 0.54 kg in 1996/1997. Internal phosphorus loading was reduced from 31.37 kg per year in 1990/1991 to 23.22 kg per year in 1996/1997. To date, there has been no reduction in external loading. Likewise, installation of a sewer system has yet to come about"--Document.
