Book Description
Excerpt from Ruskin and the English Lakes Ruskin first saw the English Lakes in 1824, when as a child of five and a half years old he journeyed in Mr. Telford's comfortable travelling coach with his mother and father and the Scotch nurse Anne from London to the north. What wine business the firm of Ruskin, Telford & Domecq hoped to do at Keswick I know not, but if it was to start the son of the younger partner in his own business in life, the visit was eventful and well rewarded. For it was on this visit that the little lad, scrambling about at Friars' Crag in charge of his nurse, felt the scene so appeal to him as to make him from that hour 'a dedicated spirit' to the beauty and the wonders of Nature. Book Description
Excerpt from English Men of Letters: John Ruskin N o doubt can remain that when John went to Oxford at the age of eighteen, his school teaching had been desultory, and his schoolboy knowledge was poor. He assures us that he never learned to write Latin prose, and with difficulty managed the regulation Latin verse. He knew the elements of Euclid well, and some algebra. He had read little in the ancient classics, and had but a smattering of French. On the other hand, he had taught himself and had picked up a good deal of general knowledge in elementary physics, and had passionately devoted himself to geology, botany, and minerals, in his own way. He had worked at museums and made collections of his own, which he carefully catalogued. Besides this, he had seen at eighteen more of England and of the Continent than most systematic tourists, and had observed and thought about all this perhaps more than any living man. He had, no doubt, written more prose and verse than has been recorded of any man of his years; and he had made himself an in defatigable student of composition, an art which from infancy he had practised with zeal and untiring patience. Book Description
From Henry David Thoreau to Bill McKibben, critics and philosophers have sought to demonstrate how a life without constant growth might still be rich and satisfying. Yet one crucial episode in the history of sustainability has been largely forgotten. "Green Victorians" recovers the story of a small circle of men and women led by political economist and art critic John Ruskin. "Green Victorians" explores how Ruskin s most enthusiastic followers turned his theory into practice in a series of ambitious local projects ranging from painting, hand-weaving, and wood-working to gardening, archaeology, story-telling, and children s education. This is a lively yet unsettling story, for while those in Ruskin s experimental community established a thriving handicraft industry and protected the Lake District from over-development, they paid a price. Richly illustrated, "Green Victorians" breaks new ground by connecting the ideas and practices of Ruskin s utopian community to the problems of ethical consumption then and now. "

Book Description
Excerpt from Ruskin and the Religion of Beauty These three essays on Ruskin and the Religion of Beauty appeared first in the Revue des Deux Mondes, and were subsequently published in the form of a book which has, I believe, been widely read in France. Perhaps those who already belong to the band of Mr. Ruskin's disciples and admirers, - those who acknowledge the power of his thought in everyday life - will be disappointed to find nothing very new or original in M. De La Sizeranne's picturesque study of the Master, but it will, I hope, be interesting to them as well as to others to note the impression made upon a foreigner by a personage who, not to mention that he is among the greatest of our stylists in prose, has permanently influenced the opinion of the English-speaking people in matters of Art.
