The rural tourism concept in Malaysia has been integrated with other tourism concepts such as sustainable tourism, indigenous tourism, ethnic tourism, agrotourism, ecotourism, farm tourism, cultural tourism and heritage tourism. This integrated concept has been explored in a few case studies involving archaeological, ecotourism, mangrove and highland tourism of rural destinations. These rural destinations offer great potentials in providing the ‘truly Malaysia’ experiences; however, it is yet to be fully capitalized. Managing rural tourism development is very challenging due to its limited resources and infrastructure; thus identification on how the destination is presented, managed and promoted are the major focus of this book. Therefore, these interesting case studies are hoped to enlighten the development of the selected rural tourism destinations in Malaysia.

Book Description
This book discusses global ecotourism and its impact on local communities in rural areas. In recent years, an increasing number of international travelers travel all over the world in search for natural resource-based settings, tranquility and adventure in remote areas. Tourist expenditures create local demands for traded goods and services, thus creating jobs and generating income for local people. This book explores the impact of global ecotourism on the livelihoods of local people in Kinabalu National Park in Sabah, Malaysia, and the extent to which they incorporate daily economic activities in ecotourism industry. This book also suggests a model of rural production (household livelihood strategies) in an ecotourism area which highlights the increase in non-agricultural income from both wage-work and home-based production. The new forms of employment have benefited local women who now have easy access to income. The consequences of world incidents such as the attack on World Trade Center on September 11, 2001; Bali bombing and the outbreak of SARS disease on the arrival of tourists and the livelihood of local people here are also discussed.

Book Description
Our Lived Realities: Reading Gender in Malaysia is rooted in the concrete experiences of women (and men) in Malaysia. This first gender anthology, produced by the Women’s Development Research Centre (KANITA), is centred on the belief that scholarly discourses should not only be framed at the academic level but that they should also be grounded in people’s lived realities. This anthology is a collection of essays based on such empirical data utilising a feminist framework and a gender lens offering new insights into the understanding and analysis of local and national issues. It maps the landscape of women’s issues which have remained persistent and unresolved over the years – issues which are often seen by policy-makers as inconsequential to economic development, but yet they impact heavily on people’s lives, often violating their rights. This volume is significant in filling the void in the local literature in women’s and gender studies. The essays are relevant and cover a wide range of topics such as gender and literature, violence against women and women’s lack of political representation; women, gender and development discourses; local interventions among poor women; inadequacies of legal codes and procedures; and the shifting boundaries of Islam, jurisprudence and gender in Malaysia. It is a must read for academics, researchers, students – not only in women’s and gender studies but also to those in sociology, law and Islamic jurisprudence, economics and development. It should also be read by policy and decision makers including civil society activists who are concerned with issues of social and gender justice in Malaysia. Book Description
Cities have a metabolism that requires energy, food, materials and water to be supplied and waste products to be removed. If cities are to remain the engines of economic growth they also require an input of knowledge as well as commodities. This fuels innovation and the skills that lead to economic success. With economic success comes the input of people and investment that require new buildings and the conservation of existing buildings. This, in turn, requires an input of both building materials and the knowledge of manufacturing and assembling them efficiently and effectively. This book reviews these aspects of development from an academic point of view and covers a wide area of professional expertise including planning, tourism, architecture, structural engineering, project management, air and water quality, conservation, landscape design, waste management and many other issues that impact on urbanism in Malaysia.
