This report contains salmon run forecasts and harvest projections for 2022 as well as a detailed review of Alaska’s 2021 commercial salmon season. The Alaska all-species salmon harvest for 2021 totaled nearly 235.0 million fish, about 44.7 million fish more than the preseason forecast of 190.1 million fish. This combined harvest was composed of approximately 275,500 Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 57.1 million sockeye salmon O. nerka, 2.8 million coho salmon O. kisutch, 161.4 million pink salmon O. gorbuscha, and 13.2 million chum salmon O. keta. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is expecting a decrease in commercial salmon harvests in 2022. The 2022 total commercial salmon harvest (all species) projection of 160.6 million fish is expected to include 310,000 Chinook salmon, a record 74 million sockeye salmon, 3.6 million coho salmon, 67.2 million pink salmon, and 15.4 million chum salmon. Compared to 2021 commercial harvests, the projected 2022 commercial harvests are expected to be as follows: 94.2 million fewer pink salmon, 16.9 million more sockeye salmon, 0.8 million more coho salmon, and 2.2 million more chum salmon.

The Alaska all-species salmon harvest for 2017 totaled 225.7 million, which was about 21.4 million more than the preseason forecast of 204.3 million. This combined harvest was composed of 262,000 Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, 53.6 million sockeye salmon O. nerka, 5.3 million coho salmon O. kisutch, 141.6 million pink salmon O. gorbuscha, and a record 25 million chum salmon O. keta. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is expecting a decrease in commercial salmon harvests in 2018, mostly due to a decrease in pink salmon harvests compared to 2017. The 2018 total commercial salmon harvest (all species) projection of 147.3 million is expected to include 99,000 Chinook salmon in areas outside Southeast Alaska, 51.6 million sockeye salmon, 4.9 million coho salmon, 69.7 million pink salmon, and 21 million chum salmon. Thus, compared to 2017 commercial harvests, the projected 2018 commercial harvests are expected to be as follows: pink salmon, 72 million fewer; sockeye salmon, 2.0 million fewer; coho salmon, 301,000 fewer; and chum salmon, 4.0 million fewer. When the appropriate data were available, harvest forecasts were arrived at through quantitative projections based on information of previous spawning levels, smolt outmigrations, returns of sibling age classes, and recent survival rates observed for hatchery releases. Other projections were based on averages of recent catch levels. Fishing effort influences average catch levels, and effort is partly determined by market conditions in addition to the size of salmon runs. Therefore, these projections may not be indicative of actual harvest levels.

Model estimates were informed by direct observations of the 2021 escapement at 3 weirs and 2021 harvest, combined with historical observations of escapement (up to 6 weirs and 14 aerial surveys), harvest, test fishery, and mark–recapture data dating back to 1976. Model results are adequate to draw broad conclusions about the 2021 run and escapement. The 2021 total run of Chinook salmon was below the 1976–2020 average of 214,475 fish. The drainagewide sustainable escapement goal of 65,000–120,000 was met in 2021. The 2022 Kuskokwim River Chinook salmon forecast is for a range of 99,000–161,000 fish.
