Book Description
We have also prepared and characterized a series of multimetallic oligomers of Ru using the pi-conjugated bridging ligand tetra-2-pyridyl-1,4-pyrazine (tppz), as well as mixed-ligand complexes with terpyridine end-caps, and analyzed their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties, comparing them with modern computational electronic structure methods. The results suggest that the high degree of metal-metal inter-unit communication in these linear oligomers yields low HOMO-LUMO gaps, high delocalization, and the onset of "quasi-band" features, all indicative that these compounds should be excellent molecular wire materials.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "MOLECULAR AND POLYMERIC METAL COMPLEXES FOR ELECTROLUMINESCENCE APPLICATIONS" submitted by Ng Po King For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in August 1999 Different types of ruthenium or rhenium containing light-emitting conjugated polymers based on derivatives of poly(p-phenylenevinylene), poly(p-phenylene), and poly(phenylene thiophene) have been synthesized. The conjugated mainchain were functionalized with different electron-withdrawing ligands such as dipyridophenazine, oxadiazole, and phenanthroline. Their opto-electronic properties were studied By combining an efficient electron-transporting segment, a hole-transporting segment, and an emissive unit in a single polymer chain with optimized composition, the resulting polymer might possess balanced hole and electron transporting properties and thus enhance the associated electroluminescence efficiency. The metal containing polymerswere synthesized by palladium catalyzed coupling reactions. The properties of the polymers can be adjusted by changing the proportion of different monomers. Apart from the polymeric materials, several trifunctional light-emitting molecules based on rhenium(I) and ruthenium(II) bipyridine complexes were studied. The hole-transporting, electron-transporting, and light-emitting functional groups are incorporated into one single molecule. The complexes were doped in different polymer hosts and their charge transport and luminescent properties were studied. The charge transports of all polymeric and molecular materials are dispersive in nature with non-Gaussian carrier distribution. It was also found that the hole and electron carrier mobilities are similar and of the order of lO DEGREESlO"5 crn DEGREESV''V1, which are both electric field and temperature dependent. The plots of In ju vs. Em show that the charge carrier mobilities decrease with increasing electric field, which suggests the presence of the off-diagonal disorder in the hopping sites. In general, the electron carrier mobilities are slightly higher than those of the hole carrier. This may due to the participation of the electron-withdrawing ligand. Moreover, the electron and hole mobilities of the metal containing polymers are approximately one order of magnitude higher than those of the metal free polymers. This is attributable to the presence of ruthenium complexes which play an important role as charge carrier. The light emitting properties of the polymeric and molecular materials are reported. In some polymers, the emission properties were influenced by the metal complexes and their content. An energy transfer process between the polymer main- chain and the metal center is proposed. Single layer light emitting devices were fabricated and subjected to forward bias. The electroluminescent spectral features resemble those of the photoluminescent spectra, indicating the same type of excitationsand energy bands involved in both photoexcitation and carrier injection by external voltage. Depending on the metal complex content, the polymers exhibit different EL spectra. The devices exhibit low turn-on voltage (5-10 V) and external quantum efficiency of 0.15-0.6 %. By using different metal complex monomers, it is capable of preparing metal-containing polymers with different emission colors and charge transport properties. Book Description
This book presents the synthetic methodologies as well as the properties and potential usage of various ruthenium-containing materials. Starting from the first examples of 'ruthenopolymers' reported in the 1970s to the 3D architectures now synthesized, these materials have shown their importance far beyond fundamental polymer science. As well as highlighting the remarkable properties and versatile applications, this book also addresses a key question related to the applications of such heavy-metal-containing materials from the perspective of achieving a sustainable future. This book is of interest to both materials scientists and chemists in academia and industry.
