Book Description
Excerpt from Rozier's History of the Early Settlement of the Mississippi Valley In 1850 Senator Rozier was a candidate for Congress, his Opponents being John F. Darby and Judge Bowlin, who was then Representative. Although he went out of St. Louis with a handsome majority, he was beaten by Darby by a few votes in the district. At that time he represented the Benton side of the political issues of the day. In 1851 he was elected Mayor of Ste. Gene vieve, when that city virtually controlled the mineral trade of Southeast Missouri. In 1854 he established at his native town an academy for the education of boys, in which he took a great interest for many years. In 1856 he was elected a member ofthe Legislature and served ably for two years. In 1858 he was elected Pre sident ofthe branch bank of the Merchants' Bank of St. Louis, located at Ste. Genevieve. In 1872 he waselected State Senator, without opposition, and has since been chairman of the Committee on Mines and Mining, a position for which he is admirably qualified by rea son Of his extensive mining operations in St. Francois, Jefferson, and other counties in Southeast Missouri. By his activity and influence he obtained a large amount from the Missouri Legislature, for the prosecution of the State geological survey. To go back a little, in 1845 Senator Rozier was a delegate to the Southwest Convention, at Memphis, of which John C. Calhoun was president, and made a re port, accompanied by a topographical map of the sub merged lands of South Missouri, which was approved by the Convention and attracted much attention. Book Description
Excerpt from Historical Address on the Early Exploration and Settlement of the Mississippi Valley: Delivered in Davenport, Iowa, January 21st 1873 The country we now occupy on this western bank of the Mississippi, and of which, as American citizens, we are justly proud, has not descended to us as a rich inheritance from a venerable and time-honored ancestry. By an historic movement grander than that of the Jewish Exodus, and an irruption that throws into the shade the Norman conquest, we are the present the present century, and within the memory of living men, this Trans-Mississippi region has borne the name of a French, monarch and acknowledged the sovereignty of a Spanish king. Through what series of changes the present state of things, as now passing before our eyes, has been brought about, would seem not altogether devoid of interest to us, the now living actors, and will be of not less interest to those who shall come after us. Desirous to contribute something, however meagre, to this historic fund, I have endeavoured to bring together, in chronological order, some of the principal events in the early exploration and settlement of the Mississippi Valley, and to weave into my narrative such incidents as I have been able to gather up from the limited sources at my command, having any direct reference to our local history. Book Description
Excerpt from Early Trade and Travel in the Lower Mississippi Valley The predominating influence of the English over the native population in this region before 1755 was due mainly to the activity of the trader, but it was perhaps enhanced by the lack of land-hungry anglo-saxon pio users. It should be borne in mind, however, that the pres ence of the trader among the aborigines was by no means an unmixed blessing; in fact, he was everywhere the source of debauching and demoralizing influence. The Indian acquired from him all the vices and none of the virtues of the white man, and sufferedas much injury from the pampering of the trafficker as he did later from the crowding of the settler. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of the Mississippi Valley The centenary of the Louisiana purchase, now close at hand, about to be commemorated by the St. Louis Exposition, is turning the thoughts of men to the region in which lies the heart of the Union. At the present moment, too, the Mississippi Valley is about to become, so to speak, politically complete. Oklahoma possesses every requisite for statehood and will, so says report, probably with the Indian Territory make application for admission as a State at the next session of Congress. Should the application be granted, the last unorganized fragment of the area of the Mississippi Valley will receive a formal constitution. Such an event marks an epoch. In view of these circumstances, it is hoped that this little book may seem timely and prove useful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
