Sharks of the Shallows
Author: Jeffrey C. Carrier
Publisher: JHU Press
ISBN: 1421422948
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 213
Book Description
Agile, sleek, and precise, sharks display many qualities we can admire and appreciate. These marvels of evolution have adapted to thrive in every major aquatic realm on the planet, from frigid Arctic waters through temperate but stormy seas and on into the tropics. However, few places on Earth are home to the amazing diversity of shark species that beautify the shallow waters of Florida and the Bahamas. In this first-ever book dedicated to the sharks of this region, biologist Jeffrey C. Carrier reveals the captivating lives of these large marine predators and describes how they have survived for over 400 million years. Guiding readers through basic biology, key attributes, and identification tips, the book explores what makes sharks such successful apex predators. Carrier explains fascinating phenomena, including the reason for the bizarre shape of the hammerhead, how a bull shark is able to swim hundreds of miles up freshwater rivers, what lies behind sharks’ remarkable capability to learn and remember, and why many scientists believe that they are equipped with the most sophisticated sensory systems in the animal kingdom. With the stunning full-color underwater photography of Andy Murch, Jillian Morris, and Duncan Brake, Sharks of the Shallows brings boaters, fishers, divers, and shark lovers directly alongside these unfairly maligned creatures. And not a moment too soon! Sharks are experiencing stresses unlike any in their long history, and are struggling to survive in a changing ocean. They will continue to grace our coastlines only if we care enough to understand them.

Oklahoma Beer
Author: Brian Welzbacher
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1439674337
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 222
Book Description
Notoriously known as a "flyover state" in regards to alcohol, Oklahoma has a unique brewing history. Entering the Union as a dry state, Oklahoma struggled with bootleggers and the choc beer brewers of Indian Territory. Prohibition wasn't fully repealed in Oklahoma until 1959, when liquor sales were permitted, but a few pioneers navigated a web of restrictions to produce quality local beers. Brewpubs opened a new chapter in 1992 as a generation thirsty for handcrafted beers led to a resurgence in the industry. Author and proprietor of BeerisOK.com Brian Welzbacher unravels the stories behind the passionate breweries that stood up to tyranny and paved a path from Dust Bowl to full glass.

A Grammar of Ngardi
Author: Thomas Ennever
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110752433
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 795
Book Description
Ngardi is a highly endangered language with fewer than 10 remaining speakers and is no longer being acquired by children. Despite the limited circulation of a draft dictionary (Cataldi, 2011), there has been no published reference grammar of this language. Upon publication, this work will constitute the most comprehensive grammar of any Ngumpin-Yapa language. The Ngardi language exhibits many of the same typologically interesting features first identified in the related language Warlpiri—namely phenomena of non-configurational syntax and null anaphora. This grammar also brings to light a number of unique properties which will be of interest to linguistic typologists and formal theorists. The registration of arguments both through case marking on free NPs as well as in pronominal enclitics is similar to Warlpiri but differs in its detail—particularly in the ability to register various non-core cases (e.g. locative and allative) as ‘arguments’ in the pronominal complex. Within the verbal system, Ngardi is notably for a large number of verbal inflections (~20) which mark various distinctions in tense, aspect and mood, as well as associated motion and speaker-centric directionality. Ngardi exhibits a highly articulated system of complex predication, covering both complex verb and serial verb constructions. Other typologically interesting aspects of the language include the presence of dedicated apprehensional constructions and interesting interactions between negation and clausal modality. The descriptive value of this grammar is enhanced by its sustained regional comparison of the linguistic features of Ngardi with those of neighbouring Ngumpin-Yapa and Western Desert languages. This grammar (and a forthcoming dictionary) of Ngardi will be of great significance to both those few remaining Ngardi speakers as well as the next generation of Ngardi people for whom accessible published materials will be an invaluable resource.
