Excerpt from book: ancient exchange. On the lower extremity of the obelisk, we remark a woman seated, representing Commerce. The figure of Time points to the solar line. The medaillon of Louis XV, which had been taken away in 1792, was replaced in 1815. This monument is by Paul Slolds, a statuary of the last century. . Saint- Jflaclou. In the year 1228, this parish was situated without the walls of the town. In that year, Geoffroy deCapreville granted a portion of ground belonging to himself, and s] nated in the parish of Saint-Maclou, without the town. At that time the church of Saint-Maclou was only a chapel, the construction of vhich'was not very remarkable. About the middle of the xvth century, the erection of the present edifice was commenced. In the year 1511, the works were far advanced, the platform which was to support the steeple having been already built. This church was formerly called the fille ainee de Mgr. I'archeveque. The sacred oils were kept in this church, and were distributed to the different parishes of the diocdse. This privilege was shown by two vases supported on two iron barson each side of the cross which surmounted the great porch. In the general processions, the cross of Saint-Maclou took precedence of all others, and led the procession. The church is forty six metres twelve centimetres in length, by twenty four metres sixty seven centimetres in breadth, taking in the aisles. Its height, from the pavement of the nave to the extremity of the ancient steeple, was about seventy eight metres. This handsome steeple, in the form of a cone, rose to a height of thirty seven metres thirty four centimetres above the lantern; one could ascend to the cross, by the exterior of it, without a ladder. Book Description
François-Théodore Licquet, born on 19 June 1787 in Caudebec-en-Caux and died on 1 November 1832 in Rouen, was a French curator and local historian. Licquet did his first studies, as a scholarship holder, at the Collège Louis-le-Grand, in Paris, and finished them at the Prytanée de Saint-Cyr. He soon abandoned the career of commerce in Rouen into which his family had pushed him at the end of his studies. For some time he fulfilled the functions of assistant secretary of the town hall of Rouen, which were for him a transition to occupations more in keeping with his tastes and more in harmony with the work and thoughts of his youth.

Book Description
Rouen, It's History and Monuments A Guide to Strangers by Theodore Licquet Cæsar, in his Commentaries does not speak of Rouen; Pomponius Mela, does not mention it in his Geography; Ptolemy is the first author who has noticed it. This observation alone will shew the absurdity of the numerous etymologies assigned to its name of Rothomagus, of which we have made Rouen. The least unlikely are those which have been taken from the primitive language of the country; but, even then we can only form conjectures more or less vague, as, in deriving Rothomagus from two celtic words, some have considered that this name signifies a great town; others, a town on the bank of a river; while others again a town where duties were paid.
