Book Description
Romford in the Great War tells the remarkable story of Romford and its surrounding areas from the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, to the long-awaited peace of 1918. Romford had a considerable military connection during the war. The area was largely associated with the famous Sportsman's Battalions, the 23rd and 24th Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers, that, as the title suggests, was made up of well-known sportsmen of the day. Initially, the battalion stayed at Hare Hall camp in Romford and Grey Towers Camp in Hornchurch, respectively. The equally famous Artists Rifles took over Hare Hall after the Sportsman Battalion left, and went on to become a renowned officer training corps. The book takes a detailed look at the districts war memorials and rolls of honor, that commemorate the names of the local young men who answered the call to arms to protect their king and country. Wynn explores some of these names in more detail, tweaking out their individual stories of heroism, bravery and devotion to duty no matter what price they had to pay. He also offers a unique flavor of what everyday life was like for the local community, by looking through the local newspapers of the day. A growing paranoia among the masses is addressed, as are the important roles of women, who were keeping the country on top form, whether delivering mail, driving a taxi or working in a local factory, while their husbands, brothers, uncles, sons and fathers were off fighting the war. This is a superb account of the people of Romfords outstanding determination to see the war through.

Book Description
THE SUNDAY TIMES TOP TEN BESTSELLER The Trophies ... The Tuesday Club ... The Prawn Crackers ... Marc Overmars may have given him the nickname, but the Romford Pele is a legend in his own right. Over 16 action-packed years, from a trainee scrubbing the boots of the first XI, to a record-breaking 333 Premier League appearances, Ray Parlour’s never-say-die performances, curly locks and mischievous sense of humour have gone down in Arsenal history. Battling tirelessly on the pitch, often in the shadows of his star-name teammates, Parlour won three premier league titles and four FA Cup trophies with the Gunners. But he was also the heart and soul of the dressing room, the training ground and the after work drink. From nights out with Tony Adams, to teaching Thierry Henry cockney rhyming slang, from playing golf with Dennis Bergkamp to trading Inspector Clouseau jokes with Arsène Wenger, this wonderfully funny and candid autobiography looks back on a golden age of the beautiful game, reliving the banter, the stories and the success. Ray Parlour is an Arsenal legend. During his 16-year career he won 3 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups and the UEFA Cup. One of the most underrated players of his generation, he was also part of Arsenal’s famous Invincible team of 2003/4, which went the entire Premier League season unbeaten. He is now a regular pundit for TalkSport and Sky Sports. He enjoys a short back and sides.

Book Description
Following the success of their prize-winning account of the infamous killing of PC George Clark - The Dagenham Murder - Linda Rhodes and Kathryn Abnett now reconstruct, in vivid detail, another sensational Victorian murder case. Inspector Thomas Simmons was shot and fatally wounded near Romford in January 1885, and the search for his killers culminated in a second police murder, this time in far-off Cumbria. In tracing the course of the crime - and the country-wide manhunt, court cases and executions that followed - the characters and methods of Simmons and his fellow officers are revealed, as are the desperate criminal careers of the killers. This meticulously researched, graphic and highly readable case study gives a rich insight into the dark side of late Victorian England.Linda Rhodes and Kathryn Abnett are the authors of two previous true crime books. The Dagenham Murder, written in collaboration with Lee Shelden, won the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger for Non-Fiction in 2006. Their most recent title is Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in Barking, Dagenham & Chadwell Heath, published by Wharncliffe in October 2007.
