Robert Aske
Author: John & Wendy Rayne-Davis
Publisher: United P.C. Verlag
ISBN: 9783710316579
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 144
Book Description
Robert Aske was a most exceptional man A born leader, brilliant organiser and ahead of his time by centuries. He nearly destroyed Henry VIII one of the most tyrancal monarchs to rule England. It was only his misguided trust in the integrity of the King which destroyed him and made him suffer a martyrs death at York in 1537. He was hung in a cage at Clifford's Tower and may have taken a fornight to die. The Pilgrimage of Grace which Aske led was without doubt the greatest threat to Henry in his reign. It was sparked off by the closure of the monasteries and convents so that Henry could appropriate their assetts. The Pilgrims also objected to the break with the Catholic Church which had existed in England for over 1000 years.
