Comparative Analysis of Technological and Intelligent Terrorism Impacts on Complex Technical Systems
Author: N.A. Makhutov
Publisher: IOS Press
ISBN: 1614991316
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 204
Book Description
Insider knowledge about a complex technical system, coupled with access to its elements, has the potential to be used for triggering the most disastrous of terrorist attacks. Technological terrorism is the unauthorized impact on a complex technical system with the intention of breaking down its protection and initiating secondary catastrophic processes to cause damage and loss outside the facility. Intelligent terrorism, on the other hand, is the unauthorized purposeful interference in the processes of design, construction or maintenance of a complex technical system, and is either aimed at increasing existing vulnerabilities or creating new ones. This book is based on the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on ‘Comparative Analysis of Technological and Intelligence Terrorism Impacts on Complex Technical Systems’. It lays the foundation for a risk-informed approach to modeling, analyzing, managing and controlling complex technical systems in the face of terrorist attacks. To formulate such an approach, it is necessary to combine the insights of a spectrum of disciplines across engineering, human and social sciences, and economics. The book explains how an understanding of the vulnerabilities of complex technical systems to terrorist attack can reduce these vulnerabilities and contain or limit the impact of terrorism, and also the way in which such an understanding is crucial to the development of a set of design criteria and codes which will take such vulnerabilities into account. The book also identifies areas of further research and opportunities for future exchange and collaboration.

Advances in Dam Engineering
Author: M. Amin Hariri-Ardebili
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039363263
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
Expansion of water resources is a key factor in the socio-economic development of all countries. Dams play a critical role in water storage, especially for areas with unequal rainfall and limited water availability. While the safety of existing dams, periodic re-evaluations and life extensions are the primary objectives in developed countries, the design and construction of new dams are the main concerns in developing countries. The role of dam engineers has greatly changed over recent decades. Thanks to new technologies, the surveillance, monitoring, design and analysis tasks involved in this process have significantly improved. The current edited book is a collection of dam-related papers. The overall aim of this edited book is to improve modeling, simulation and field measurements for different dam types (i.e. concrete gravity dams, concrete arch dams, and embankments). The articles cover a wide range of topics on the subject of dams, and reflect the scientific efforts and engineering approaches in this challenging and exciting research field.

Probabilistic Modeling in System Engineering
Author: Andrey Kostogryzov
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1789237742
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 292
Book Description
This book is intended for systems analysts, designers, developers, users, experts, as well as those involved in quality, risk, safety and security management, and, of course, scientists and students. The various sets of original and traditional probabilistic models and interesting results of their applications to the research of different systems are presented. The models are understandable and applicable for solving system engineering problems: to optimize system requirements, compare different processes, rationale technical decisions, carry out tests, adjust technological parameters, and predict and analyze quality and risks. The engineering decisions, scientifically proven by the proposed models and software tools, can provide purposeful, essential improvement of quality and mitigation of risks, and reduce the expense of operating systems. Models, methods, and software tools can also be used in education for system analysis and mathematical modeling on specializations, for example "systems engineering," "operations research," "enterprise management," "project management," "risk management," "quality of systems," "safety and security," "smart systems," "system of systems," etc.

Adaptation to Climate Change through Water Resources Management
Author: Dominic Stucker
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113620038X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 480
Book Description
The impacts of human-induced climate change are largely mediated by water, such as alterations in precipitation and glacial melt patterns, variations in river flow, increased occurrence of droughts and floods, and sea level rise in densely populated coastal areas. Such phenomena impact both urban and rural communities in developed, emerging, and developing countries. Taking a systems approach, this book analyzes evidence from 26 countries and identifies common barriers and bridges for local adaptation to climate change through water resources management. It includes a global set of case studies from places experiencing increased environmental and social pressure due to population growth, development and migration, including in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America. All chapters consider the crosscutting themes of adaptive capacity, equity, and sustainability. These point to resilient water allocation policies and practices that are capable of protecting social and environmental interests, whilst ensuring the efficient use of an often-scarce resource.

Dark Allure of the Côte d’Azur
Author:
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3111451321
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 393
Book Description
This is the first critical work on the history of the French Riviera from its origins in the eighteenth century to the present day in the English language. It makes the argument that multi-faceted power and violence – war, murder, land dispossession and other privations targeted at the poor, imperialism and ecological degradation (land, sea, rivers and air) – has been integral to the making of the Côte d’Azur. Invariably, this has been downplayed in previous general histories that tend to focus on the personal lives and loves of famous outsiders. In effect, the complex general history of the place is rarely told. Bryant seeks to set that record straight in an innovative work crisscrossing the borders of European and imperial history, geography, politics and environmental studies that will be of interest to an array of scholars, students and general readers who wish to learn about how the planet’s most famous coastal resort was made.

Critical Infrastructure Protection
Author: Stephen L. Caldwell
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1437931839
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 48
Book Description
According to the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS), there are thousands of facilities in the U.S. that if destroyed by a disaster could cause casualties, econ. losses, or disruptions to national security. DHS issued the Nat. Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) in June 2006 to provide the approach for integrating the nation's critical infrastructure and key resources. This report studied DHS's Jan. 2009 revisions to the NIPP in light of a debate over whether DHS has emphasized protection rather than resilience. The report discusses: (1) how the 2009 NIPP changed compared to the 2006 NIPP; and (2) how DHS addressed resiliency as part of their planning efforts. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand edition of an important, hard-to-find report.
