Excerpt from Rfd Letter to Radio Farm Directors, From Radio and Television Service: June 1, 1956-June 29, 1956 As the Secretary pointed out, it is so late in the season the Department is moving with all possible Speed to make the Soil Bank available to those farmers who can take part this year. Before farmers plant next year's crops or make fall seedings of grain this year, usda will have a chance to review and study all provisions of the program in more detail. Then they can make any desirable changes before the '57 Soil Bank gets under way. Farmers who take part in the Conservation Reserve part of the 8011 Bank can earn two types of payment: (1) A payment to cover most of the labor and other cost of setting up a conservation practice, (2) An annual payment for the period of the individual Conservation Reserve agreement. The specialists figure the annual Conservation Reserve payments will average out nationally at about ten dollars an acre. Book Description
Excerpt from Rfd Letter to Radio Farm Directors: From Radio and Television Service; April 1, 1955 Jules Renaud announces that this week's TV package from.the Department is about those now famous identical twin - calves and what they have shown farmers and ranchers about feeding calves carried several months on sparse winter forage or drought-stricken range. Identical twin-calves are no ordinary twins they look alike, act alike, feed alike, and are alike because they developed from the same egg. Their use in research is just the scientist's gimmick to get quick results at lower cost. By using one of the twins as a control, they can get a more accurate test of the feeding of the other than if they used quite a number of ordinary animals for the test. The 20 frames of slide film Jules is sending out this week show how to feed calves so they make a come-back after being a long time on short rations, if they get enough protein, carotene, and minerals. This twin-calf research is continuing to find out just how little protein supplement is enough. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Rfd Letter to Radio Farm Directors From Radio and Television Service Usda researchers report strong indications in this country, as well as in certain foreign countries, that by more intensive grazing management, and pasture use, output of even our most productive improved pastures could be increased by 20 to 30 percent. They admit that more information is needed on just how much supplemental-grain feeding dairy cows on pasture actually have to have. But in view of possible lower milk prices, they think we should emphasize that milk cows on intensively managed pastures may need little or no grain. Book Description
Excerpt from Rfd Letter to Radio Farm Directors From Radio and Television Service: July, 1959 Beginning July 20 at Cornell U. A couple of United Nations agencies are Sponsoring a two-month training program for scientists from 18 countries. Fao and the International Atomic Energy Agency aim to help researchers of other countries understand how to use radiation and radioactive isotopes as tools of agricultural research. Only the invited scientists will take part in the experi mental work. But the lectures may interest other technically trained people and interested persons are welcome to attend. In the next 12 months, cattle slaughter may start upward and prices downward. But our marketing economists doubt the turn-about in volume of slaughter next year will be big enough to hold down very much the rate at which cattle herds are being built up. In the Livestock and Meat Situation issued Tuesday, they again pointed out that unless the present rate estimated at it to 5 million more head a year is reduced soon, we can expect a very large increase in cattle slaughter and very sharp reduction in cattle prices early in the l96o's. They also see continuing danger in the hog situation. Early last year the hog corn ratio was record big Recently it has been down near normal. They expect it to stay close to normal in future months. That will tend to slow up the current uptrend in hog production. But, it may not stop it soon. They figure that if farrowings should be increased much further next spring, hog prices would become seriously depressed in the fall of 1960.
