This paper aims to re-examine the impact of non-renewable energy consumption on economic growth in South Africa using disaggregated data over the period from 1970 to 2020. The study uses a non-linear ARDL model based to examine this linkage. In addition, the study uses disaggregated levels of energy consumption, namely electricity, coal, gas, and oil. The study found that there is a long-run non-linear relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in all energy consumption proxies, with the exception of electricity consumption. In the main, the study found that i) a positive shock in coal consumption has a positive impact on economic growth in the long run; ii) negative and positive shocks in gas consumption have a positive impact on economic growth in the long- and short run, respectively; and iii) a negative shock in oil consumption has a positive impact on economic growth in the short- and long run.

Purpose: The study examines the relationship between renewable energy consumption and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa.MethodologyPedronicointegration test was employed to examine the long-run relationship between economic growth and renewable energy consumption in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study also used the Granger causality test to determine the direction of causality between economic growth and renewable energy consumption.Findings: It emerged that renewable energy consumption Granger causes economic growth in the short run. However, economic growth does not granger cause renewable energy consumption in the short run. Moreover, economic growth Granger causes granger energy consumption in the long run, but energy consumption does not cause economic growth in the long run.Originality: This paper is the first attempt to empirically study the relationship between renewable energy and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa using the Pedroni Cointegration technique and Granger causality test.LimitationsDue to the unavailability of data, not all countries in Sub-Sahara Africa were included in the data analysis.Recommendation: Government agencies should implement policies that encourage a switch from fossil fuel to renewable energy consumption to ensure sustained economic growth.ConclusionIt concludes that renewable energy consumption drives economic growth.

The aim of this paper is to provide new empirical evidence on the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth for 21 African countries over the period from 1970 to 2006, using recently developed panel cointegration and causality tests. The countries are divided into two groups: net energy importers and net energy exporters. It is found that there exists a long-run equilibrium relationship between energy consumption, real GDP, prices, labor and capital for each group of countries as well as for the whole set of countries. This result is robust to possible cross-country dependence and still holds when allowing for multiple endogenous structural breaks, which can differ among countries. Furthermore, we find that decreasing energy consumption decreases growth and vice versa, and that increasing energy consumption increases growth, and vice versa, and that this applies for both energy exporters and importers. Finally, there is a marked difference in the cointegration relationship when country groups are considered.

As the trend in increasing demand for energy, energy security, increasing change in climates, and the rising rate of globalization and determination for economic growth continues to gain momentum, governments all over the world are paying more attention to the far-reaching impacts on ideas that can ensure growth in their various nations. The paper examines the relationship between renewable energy consumption, gross domestic savings and economic development in west Africa using panel data for 15 countries from 1997 to 2020. The long-run PMG analysis results show the variables' individual contributions. Renewable energy consumption was positively related to economic growth in the long run; gross domestic savings were only significant in the short run showing a positive relationship with economic growth, which is in line with Solow Swan's idea on the growth model in the short run but was not significant in the long run. The interaction of both GDS and REC was not substantial in the long run showing both variables only contribute individually to the economic growth in west Africa. ECM shows a 22% rate of speed of adjustment in case of disequilibrium in the short run.

Peter’s accomplishments are legendary among his students and the profession. Each of the papers in this Festschrift is a research work executed by a former PhD student of Peter’s, from his days at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to his time at Michigan State University. Most of the papers were presented at The Conference in Honor of Peter Schmidt, June 30 - July 2, 2011. The conference was largely attended by his former students and one current student, who traveled from as far as Europe and Asia to honor Peter. This was a conference to celebrate Peter’s contribution to our contributions. By “our contributions” we mean the research papers that make up this Festschrift and the countless other publications by his students represented and not represented in this volume. Peter’s students may have their families to thank for much that is positive in their lives. However, if we think about it, our professional lives would not be the same without the lessons and the approaches to decision making that we learned from Peter. We spent our days together at Peter’s conference and the months since reminded of these aspects of our personalities and life goals that were enhanced, fostered, and nurtured by the very singular experiences we have had as Peter’s students. We recognized in 2011 that it was unlikely we would all be together again to celebrate such a wonderful moment in ours and Peter’s lives and pledged then to take full advantage of it.
