This report summarizes the findings of a science review that focussed on two proposed seismic surveys within three exploration licenses off the Cape Breton coast. The purpose of the review was to assess the existing base of scientific, technical, & experiential knowledge and the gaps in this knowledge to determine the likelihood of significant adverse environmental effects of those proposed surveys. The report first describes the review process & approach and the application of each component of this approach to the findings & conclusions. It then discusses general issues & concerns in three areas (the scope of available information on the affected area's marine resources, the characterization of the potential zone of influence, and the extrapolation of information from one area to another) and specific issues such as the effects of seismic surveys on fisheries, the responses of various categories of marine animals, and cumulative & ecosystem effects. The concluding section notes the most critical issues of concern and makes recommendations for monitoring & research.
