Book Description
"This review of fishing-related incidental mortality (FRIM) for Pacific salmon provides a series of foundational steps towards a better biological understanding and an overall risk assessment of FRIM. These include: a comprehensive review of factors linked to FRIM; a mortality rate evidence catalogue that amalgamates relevant mortality estimates; a synthesis of five key factors that are most relevant to derive and compare relative risks of FRIM across Pacific salmon fisheries; a risk assessment tool to combine the impacts of the key factors into relative mortality risk scores; and a discussion of possible anchoring methods to translate relative mortality risk scores into absolute mortality rate estimates. The provision of absolute FRIM rate estimates for individual fisheries was not within the scope of this review"--Conclusion, p. 8-9.

Book Description
"These Proceedings summarize the relevant discussions and key conclusions that resulted from a Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat (CSAS) Regional Peer Review (RPR) meeting that took place June 6-7, 2016 at the Vancouver Island Convention Centre in Nanaimo, B.C. Two working papers focusing on the review and evaluation of fishing-related incidental mortality for Pacific salmon were presented for peer review. The conclusions and advice resulting from this review will be provided in the form of a Science Advisory Report providing advice to Fisheries Management to inform future processes to derive and/or modify fishing-related incidental mortality estimates for use in the assessment and management of Pacific salmon fisheries. The Science Advisory Report and two supporting Research Documents will be made publicly available on the Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat (CSAS) website"--Summary, p. iv.

Book Description
Conservation physiology is a rapidly expanding, multidisciplinary field that utilizes physiological knowledge and tools to understand and solve conservation challenges. This novel text provides the first consolidated overview of its scope, purpose, and applications, with a focus on wildlife. It outlines the major avenues and advances by which conservation physiology is contributing to the monitoring, management, and restoration of wild animal populations. This book also defines opportunities for further growth in the field and identifies critical areas for future investigation. By using a series of global case studies, contributors illustrate how approaches from the conservation physiology toolbox can tackle a diverse range of conservation issues including the monitoring of environmental stress, predicting the impact of climate change, understanding disease dynamics, improving captive breeding, and reducing human-wildlife conflict. Moreover, by acting as practical road maps across a diversity of sub-disciplines, these case studies serve to increase the accessibility of this discipline to new researchers. The diversity of taxa, biological scales, and ecosystems highlighted illustrate the far-reaching nature of the discipline and allow readers to gain an appreciation for the purpose, value, applicability, and status of the field of conservation physiology. Conservation Physiology is an accessible supplementary textbook suitable for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of conservation science, eco-physiology, evolutionary and comparative physiology, natural resources management, ecosystem health, veterinary medicine, animal physiology, and ecology.

Book Description
This handbook presents a much-needed and comprehensive exploration of the rapidly growing fields of animal welfare and law. In recent years there has been increasing attention paid to our complex, multifaceted relationships with other animals, and in particular, the depth and breadth of various societal uses of animals. This has led to a reconsideration of their moral and social status, which has sometimes challenged the interests of those who use animals. In such a contested domain, sound evidence and reasoning become particularly important. Through firm commitment to such principles, this book explores the biological foundations for the moral consideration of animals and for evolving conceptualisations of animal welfare. It reviews in detail the welfare concerns associated with numerous forms of animal use. The inclusion of key recent developments such as climate change, pandemics, and antimicrobial resistance, ensures this text is among the most current in its field. The ethical implications of the various uses of animals by society are considered, and chapters provide important recommendations for reforms of practice, law, or policy. The status of animal law internationally, and in major world regions, is reviewed. Finally, the book considers human behavioural change and strategies for improving stakeholder communication and education. The handbook is essential reading for students and scholars of animal welfare, animal law and animal ethics everywhere, and for policy-makers and other professionals working in the animal welfare sector.

Book Description
This paper compares means, variances, and distributions of published survival rates for Pacific salmon across species and life-history stages. The paper also estimates the contribution of freshwater and marine habitats to total recruitment variation, and re-examines differences among species first considered by Neave (1948) using the much larger database that is now available. The study methods include a statistical distribution of salmon survival rates, a statistical analysis of mortality, and comparison of empirical estimates of mean mortality for each species to an estimate of egg-adult mortality derived from fecundity. Species considered in this paper include Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, O. keta, O. nerka, O. kisutch, and O. tshawytscha.
