Continuous production of cotton in the South, corn in the Ohio and upper Mississippi Valleys, and wheat in the central and northern Great Plains and the Palouse country of Oregon, Washing ton, and Idaho has resulted in an enormous loss of valuable soil through erosion (fig. There are no more new lands to move to when the fields become unproductive, and the speculative farming days are ending. Gra dually7 the speculators are being forced out and farmers who love the land and have a real desire to maintain it for future generations are taking possession. The wave of speculative farming, naturally, was from east to west; and the older agriculture of the Eastern States, as would be expected, apparently has a higher per centage of nonspeculative farmers.
