The Literature of the Restoration
Author: Percy John Dobell

Book Description
Excerpt from The Literature of the Restoration: Being a Collection of the Poetrical and Dramatic Literature Produced Between the Years 1660 and 1700, With Particular Reference to the Writings of John Dryden I Do not think any work exists from which a general view of the activities of the poets and playwrights of the last forty years of the seventeenth century can bo obtained. No exhaustive attempt has yet been made at writing the history of English Literature during this period, and bibliographical particulars regarding the various writers and their works are of the scantiest. This collection is by no means complete, but it provides, I believe, a fuller and better list of the names of the writers and the titles of their productions than can be obtained elsewhere, even diligent students of our poetical literature, glancing over these pages, will probably observe many works hitherto unknown to them. At no other period of our history were courtiers, politicians and poets so much given to conducting their controversies in verse, and it may be that the personal element conduced to the preservation of a great deal of the fugitive poetry of the time, though much must have utterly perished. Dryden's right to rank among the greatest of our poets is undeniable, yet a definitive edition of his works has still to be published, for Scott's cannot be ranked as a critical edition, and Professor Saintsbury's is little more than a re-issue of Scott. Neither, editor made any attempt at collating the early editions of the plays or providing the means for a textual study of the poet. I doubt whether any library, public or private, contains so many of the early editions of the ploys of Dryden and his contemporaries as I have here amassed, and if the present collection could be preserved intact it would form a valuable nucleus on which to found a comprehensive study of the literature of the time.
