Book Description
DANS CETTE THESE, NOUS ETUDIONS LE PROBLEME DE LA CONVECTION NATURELLE DANS DEUX CAVITES DISTINCTES. DANS LA PREMIERE PARTIE, NOUS MONTRONS L'EXISTENCE D'UN ATTRACTEUR GLOBAL ET ESTIMONS SA DIMENSION (DE HAUSDORFF ET FRACTALE) EN FONCTION DU NOMBRE DE RAYLEIGH ET DU RAPPORT DE FORME. CES RESULTATS SONT COMPATIBLES AVEC LES EXPERIENCES PHYSIQUES DU PROBLEME. DANS LA DEUXIEME PARTIE, NOUS ESTIMONS NUMERIQUEMENT LA DIMENSION DE L'ATTRACTEUR. POUR CE FAIRE, NOUS CALCULONS LES EXPOSANTS DE LYAPUNOV LOCAUX POUR DES SIGNAUX APERIODIQUES OBTENUS EXPERIMENTALEMENT OU NUMERIQUEMENT. LES SOLUTIONS NUMERIQUES SONT OBTENUES EN RESOLVANT LES EQUATIONS DE LA CONVECTION PAR UNE METHODE SPECTRALE. LE CALCUL DE CES EXPOSANTS NECESSITE LA RECONSTRUCTION DE L'ATTRACTEUR DANS L'ESPACE EUCLIDIEN DE DIMENSION D (D OBTENU A PARTIR DE L'OBSERVATION EXPERIMENTALE). CETTE RECONSTRUCTION SE FAIT GRACE A L'OBSERVATION D'UN POINT DIT MONITEUR ET LA METHODE DES RETARDS. NOUS METTONS AINSI EN EVIDENCE LE SCENARIO DE RUELLE-TAKENS. ENSUITE, NOUS DONNONS DES APPROXIMATIONS DES OPERATEURS TANGENTS. NOUS TERMINONS L'ALGORITHME PAR L'UTILISATION DE LA METHODE QR POUR CALCULER LE PRODUIT DES OPERATEURS TANGENTS. ON DEDUIT ALORS LES EXPOSANTS DE LYAPUNOV ET LA DIMENSION DE L'ATTRACTEUR. NOUS TESTONS CES ALGORITHMES SUR LES EQUATIONS DE LORENZ ET AU SYSTEME DYNAMIQUE DISCRET DE HENON. LES CALCULS NUMERIQUES DES EXPOSANTS DE LYAPUNOV POUR DES SIGNAUX PROVENANT DU PROBLEME DE LA CONVECTION NOUS ONT PERMIS DE CONSTATER LEURS CARACTERES CHAOTIQUES POUR UN CERTAIN NOMBRE DE RAYLEIGH. LA TROISIEME PARTIE OFFRE UNE AUTRE PREUVE D'EXISTENCE, D'UNICITE ET DE REGULARITE DES SOLUTIONS POUR LE PROBLEME DE LA CONVECTION VIA UN THEOREME ABSTRAIT. CE THEOREME PEUT ETRE APPLIQUE A D'AUTRES PROBLEMES DE LA MECANIQUE DES FLUIDES SUR UN DOMAINE PHYSIQUE QUELCONQUE ET AVEC DES DONNEES INITIALES IRREGULIERES

Book Description
This new, third volume of Cohen-Tannoudji's groundbreaking textbook covers advanced topics of quantum mechanics such as uncorrelated and correlated identical particles, the quantum theory of the electromagnetic field, absorption, emission and scattering of photons by atoms, and quantum entanglement. Written in a didactically unrivalled manner, the textbook explains the fundamental concepts in seven chapters which are elaborated in accompanying complements that provide more detailed discussions, examples and applications. * Completing the success story: the third and final volume of the quantum mechanics textbook written by 1997 Nobel laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his colleagues Bernard Diu and Franck Laloë * As easily comprehensible as possible: all steps of the physical background and its mathematical representation are spelled out explicitly * Comprehensive: in addition to the fundamentals themselves, the books comes with a wealth of elaborately explained examples and applications Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he also studied and received his PhD in 1962. In 1973 he became Professor of atomic and molecular physics at the Collège des France. His main research interests were optical pumping, quantum optics and atom-photon interactions. In 1997, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, together with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Bernard Diu was Professor at the Denis Diderot University (Paris VII). He was engaged in research at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and High Energy where his focus was on strong interactions physics and statistical mechanics. Franck Laloë was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Book Description
This book is an introduction to differential manifolds. It gives solid preliminaries for more advanced topics: Riemannian manifolds, differential topology, Lie theory. It presupposes little background: the reader is only expected to master basic differential calculus, and a little point-set topology. The book covers the main topics of differential geometry: manifolds, tangent space, vector fields, differential forms, Lie groups, and a few more sophisticated topics such as de Rham cohomology, degree theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces. Its ambition is to give solid foundations. In particular, the introduction of “abstract” notions such as manifolds or differential forms is motivated via questions and examples from mathematics or theoretical physics. More than 150 exercises, some of them easy and classical, some others more sophisticated, will help the beginner as well as the more expert reader. Solutions are provided for most of them. The book should be of interest to various readers: undergraduate and graduate students for a first contact to differential manifolds, mathematicians from other fields and physicists who wish to acquire some feeling about this beautiful theory. The original French text Introduction aux variétés différentielles has been a best-seller in its category in France for many years. Jacques Lafontaine was successively assistant Professor at Paris Diderot University and Professor at the University of Montpellier, where he is presently emeritus. His main research interests are Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, including some aspects of mathematical relativity. Besides his personal research articles, he was involved in several textbooks and research monographs.

Book Description
Once treated as the absence of knowledge, ignorance today has become a highly influential topic in its own right, commanding growing attention across the natural and social sciences where a wide range of scholars have begun to explore the social life and political issues involved in the distribution and strategic use of not knowing. The field is growing fast and this handbook reflects this interdisciplinary field of study by drawing contributions from economics, sociology, history, philosophy, cultural studies, anthropology, feminist studies, and related fields in order to serve as a seminal guide to the political, legal and social uses of ignorance in social and political life. Book Description
La méthode originale repose sur l'analyse des fonctions et structures nécessaires : measurement, frequency, comparison, modification, link words, time, cause and consequence, hypothesis, modality, purpose and process, impersonal forms, compound nouns and adjectives.
