Book Description
Excerpt from The Economic Utilization of History: And Other Economic Studies The contents of this little volume consist in the main of studies which have already appeared in print. All of them have, how ever, been revised, and the greater part of the first two chapters is new. Though the studies have been written for special occa sions during the past four years, they all represent one point of view, and the last nine chapters may be considered an appli cation in the several fields of labor legisla tion, business organization, and charity, of the scientific methods advocated in Chap ters I, II, and III. In order to bring out better this continuity of thought most of the essays have been subdivided, and new titles assigned to them. Book Description
The financial crisis and the economic crisis that followed triggered a crisis in the subject of economics, as it is typically being taught today especially in macroeconomics and related fields. A renewed interest in earlier authors, especially the classical economists from Adam Smith to David Ricardo and John Maynard Keynes, developed. This book may also be seen as a response to this interest. What can we learn from the authors mentioned, what we could not learn from the mainstream? This volume contains a selection of essays which deepens and widens the understanding of the classical approach to important problems, such as value and distribution, growth and technical progress, and exhaustible natural resources. It is the fourth collection in a row and reflects an on-going discussion of the fecundity of the classical approach. A main topic of the essays is a comparison between the classical approaches with modern theory and thus an identification of what can be learned by elaborating on the ideas of Smith and Ricardo and Marx above and beyond and variously in contradiction to certain mainstream view. Since the work of Piero Sraffa spurred the revival of classical economic thought, his contributions are dealt with in some detail. The attention then focuses on economic growth and the treatment of exhaustible resources within a classical framework of the analysis.

Book Description
Excerpt from History of Economic Thought: A Critical Account of the Origin and Development of the Economic Theories of the Leading Thinkers in the Leading Nations It is the aim of this book to present a critical account of the whole development of economic thought in the leading nations of the Occidental world; and, while keeping the purely economic viewpoint, to indicate some of the most important relations of economic thought with philosophy and environmental conditions. As it is designed to serve as a textbook for the growing number of advanced students who study the history of Economics, every effort has been made to give a fair and well-rounded account of the thought of the leading writers, avoiding the emphasis of some newly discovered point or interesting but obscure writer which would characterize a monograph. Doubtless there will be some difference of opinion about the relative space here devoted to the different economists, and some cases of omission or bare mention will be criticized. It should therefore be stated that a twofold test has been the basis of selection in this regard: first, what has been the writers effect upon the stream of economic thought? next, what important point in theory has he originated or developed? If his contribution has been both discovery, in theory and a profound effect on his contemporaries, then he deserves considerable discussion. These two phases of importance do not necessarily go together, as the experience of Lloyd, Gossen, and others bears witness. In covering so vast a field it has seemed desirable to standardize the method of treatment to some extent. Book Description
Excerpt from Economic Studies Adam smith completed the Wealth of Nations in 1776, and our English Political Economy is there fore just a hundred years Old. In that time it has had a wonderful effect. The life Of almost every one in England - perhaps Of every one - is different and better in consequence Of it. The whole com mercial policy Of the country is not so much founded on it as instinct with it. Ideas which are paradoxes everywhere else in the world are accepted axioms here as results Of it. NO other form Of political philosophy has ever had one thousandth part Of the influence on us; its teachings have settled down into the common sense Of the nation, and have become irreversible. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Political Economy It is with great pleasure that I embrace the opportunity afforded me by the publishers of Dr. Ingram's "History of Political Economy" to commend the book to the attention of the American public. Dr. Ingram needs no introduction to our students of economics. His work in the Encyclopaedia Britannica has attracted marked attention wherever earnest thinkers are studying the social and economic problems of our time, whether in Europe or America. The present treatise deserves especial notice, as the first serious attempt by a properly qualified English writer to present a view of the progress of economic thought The works of M'Culloch and Twiss on the same subject were of value only because there was nothing else on the same topic. They testify eloquently to the exceedingly primitive state of the history of economic thought and policy which existed in their day. The work of Blanqui, recently translated into English, is rather a history of economic systems (and a poor one even as such) than of economic theories and doctrines. Up to the time of the appearance of the nineteenth volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica there was no essay on the subject in English which could be considered a very valuable one. We now have a treatise which will compare favourably with any work of similar compass in any other language. Book Description
Excerpt from Economic Interpretation of History The lectures contained in this volume were delivered in the hall of the author's College (worcester, Oxford) in his capacity as lecturer in Political Economy to that Society. They were open to all members of the university, and were very numerously attended. I mention this, because, being printed as they were read, the fact may explain or excuse the various local allusions which they con tain, and the occasional repetitions of statement which will be found in them. The business of a lecturer is to teach as best he can. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
This book examines the origins of the IS-LM model, one of the most significant innovations in the history of economic thought. It shows that the complete IS-LM model, including the equations and diagram, was produced by a group of economists who contributed their respective mathematical models of Keynes’s General Theory, including Champernowne, Reddaway, Harrod, and Meade, not to mention Hicks. Furthermore, the book discusses the implications of newly discovered archival material, including a previously overlooked document showing that John Maynard Keynes himself was the first to present the IS-LM model equations in a lecture he gave on December 4, 1933. It focuses on the implications of this material in terms of understanding the evolution of Keynes’s approach from 1933 to 1937, later interpreters of his General Theory, and the ongoing debate between Keynesians and Post-Keynesians on the nature of his system. Given the revelations it presents, this book will transform the profession’s understanding of the origins of the IS-LM model and modern macroeconomics.
