The book describes developments in the crystal growth of bulk II-VI semiconductor materials. A fundamental, systematic, and in-depth study of the physical vapor transport (PVT) growth process is the key to producing high-quality single crystals of semiconductors. As such, the book offers a comprehensive overview of the extensive studies on ZnSe and related II-VI wide bandgap compound semiconductors, such as CdS, CdTe, ZnTe, ZnSeTe and ZnSeS. Further, it shows the detailed steps for the growth of bulk crystals enabling optical devices which can operate in the visible spectrum for applications such as blue light emitting diodes, lasers for optical displays and in the mid-IR wavelength range, high density recording, and military communications. The book then discusses the advantages of crystallization from vapor compared to the conventional melt growth: lower processing temperatures, the purification process associated with PVT, and the improved surface morphology of the grown crystals, as well as the necessary drawbacks to the PVT process, such as the low and inconsistent growth rates and the low yield of single crystals. By presenting in-situ measurements of transport rate, partial pressures and interferometry, as well as visual observations, the book provides detailed insights into in the kinetics during the PVT process. This book is intended for graduate students and professionals in materials science as well as engineers preparing and developing optical devices with semiconductors.

The preparation and purification of elemental cadmium by zone refining are described. A comparison of the emission and mass spectrographic results on the zoning of a doped cadmium test bar is presented. The syntheses of high purity cadmium sulfide, cadmium selenide, zinc sulfide, and zinc selenide by the direct reaction of their gaseous elemental constituents are discussed. Emission and mass spectrographic data on synthesized cadmium sulfide are compared. The syntheses of zinc telluride, mercuric sulfide, mercuric selenide, and mercuric telluride by the combination of the elements in the liquid phase are outlined. A method for preparing barium telluride by the reduction of barium tellurate is given. Special handling techniques and x-ray characterization of this material are presented. Crystal growth of cadmium sulfide, zinc sulfide, cadmium selenide, zinc selenide, and mixed crystals of zinc sulfide-zinc selenide from the melt in a high pressure furnace is discussed. Doping of melt grown crystals is described. A discussion of the crystal growth of cadmium sulfide, zinc sulfide, and cadmium oxide by vapor phase techniques is presented. (Author).

The preparation of powders of II-VI compounds of high purity was investigated. The group II metal starting material was purified by repeated distillation under argon. Purities of 99.99% were attained. Various methods of synthesis of the compounds were evaluated with regard to maintaining purity and additional purification. Hydrogen reduction of the chalcogenates was selected, resulting in powders with a total impurity content of less than 40 ppm. Attempts to grow single crystals were only partly successful due to the highly refractory nature of the compounds. Small single crystals of barium sulfide were obtained, however, they are heavily contaminated with tungsten. (Author).
