Annie W. Armstrong, more familiarly known as "Miss Annie," served as the first corresponding secretary of the Women's Missionary Union, Auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention. Between 1888 and 1906 she wrote hundreds of letters on behalf of Southern Baptist missionary enterprises. Almost all of her letters inimitably expressed her opinion of "how things ought to be." Rescue the Perishing offers for the first time a selection of letters from this remarkable woman's life. As a group, these letters indicate that Armstrong was both an innovator and tireless promoter of numerous missionary projects at home and abroad. Stubborn and forthright, some might even say abrasive, Miss Annie's correspondence demonstrates that she was a gifted administrator with unparalleled organizational skills. A critical examination of the Woman’s Missionary Union and how it shaped the views of Southern Baptist women The Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU), founded in 1888, carved out a uniquely feminine space within the Southern Baptist Convention during the tumultuous years of the Progressive Era when American theologians were formulating the social gospel. These women represented the Southern Baptist elite and as such had the time to read, write, and discuss ideas with other Southern progressives. They rubbed shoulders with more progressive Methodist and Presbyterian women in clubs and ecumenical missionary meetings. Baptist women studied the missionary publications of these other denominations and adopted ideas for a Southern Baptist audience. Home without Walls: Southern Baptist Women and Social Reform in the Progressive Era shows how the social attitudes of women were shaped at the time. By studying primary documents—including personal letters, official exchanges and memoranda, magazine publications, newsletters, and editorials—Carol Crawford Holcomb uncovers ample evidence that WMU leaders, aware of the social gospel and sympathetic to social reform, appropriated the tools of social work and social service to carry out their missionary work. Southern Baptist women united to build a financial empire that would sustain the Southern Baptists through the Great Depression and beyond. Their social attitudes represented a kaleidoscope of contrasting opinions. By no stretch of the imagination could WMU leaders be characterized as liberal social gospel advocates. What and how were nineteenth-century women taught through conduct books and hymnbooks? What did women learn about reading and writing at a state normal school and at the Cherokee Nation's female seminary? What did Radcliffe women think of rhetoric classes imported from Harvard? How did women begin to gain their voices through speaking and writing in literary societies and by keeping diaries and journals? How did African American women use literacy as a tool for social action? How did women's writing portray alternative views of the western frontier? The essays in this volume address these questions and more in exploring the gendered nature of education in the nineteenth century. These essays give a more complete picture of literacy in the nineteenth century. Part one presents a panoply of sites and cultural contexts in which women learned to write, including ideological contexts, institutional sites, and informal settings such as literary circles. Part two examines specific genres, texts, and "voices" of literate women and students of writing and speaking. Nineteenth-Century Women Learn to Write interweaves thick feminist social history with theoretical perspectives from such diverse fields as linguistics and folklore, feminist literary theory, and African American and Native American studies. The volume constitutes a major addition to traditional social science studies of literacy.
