L'erreur et ses représentations auprès des étudiants restent peu étudiées, malgré l'émergence de la question de la sécurité du patient depuis une vingtaine d'années. Les politiques internationales plaident pourtant l'amélioration des compétences des étudiants dans ce domaine, en formant ces derniers aux concepts de sécurité. A ce titre, il est nécessaire de comprendre en amont de tout programme enseignement, leurs représentations de ce qu'est une erreur. Une étude qualitative par entretiens semi-dirigés a été réalisée, auprès d'étudiants entre la 2e année des études médicales et la fin de l'internat. 22 entretiens ont été conduits ; les étudiants ont des difficultés à définir l'erreur. Ils perçoivent pourtant les bénéfices potentiels de l'analyse des erreurs qu'ils rencontrent, mais craignent de souffrir de leur impact négatif. Leurs représentations sont influées par le message véhiculé dans notre société : une erreur punitive et qui fait peur. Ils perçoivent peu l'enseignement de la sécurité pendant leurs études de médecine, et leur formation à l'erreur semble principalement empirique. Ils souhaiteraient pourtant améliorer leurs compétences dans ce domaine, dès le début du cursus, accompagnés d'enseignants bienveillants et dans un contexte propice. Ce travail exploratoire est cohérent avec d'autres études ; la notion d'erreur reste confuse et la dimension de la sécurité du patient peu accessible aux étudiants, sinon dans le cursus caché. Il semble indispensable de mettre en place un enseignement de la sécurité, en formant également les enseignants à la sécurité et l'erreur, autant en contexte académique qu'en stage. Il est important de comprendre les représentations des étudiants encore ambivalente visà- vis des erreurs dans le but de les former et ainsi participer à l'amélioration de la qualité des soins en termes de sécurité du patient.
