La population française a vieilli. Les projections démographiques prévoient en 2010 5,6 millions de personnes de plus de 65 ans contre 4 millions en 1997. Cette progression sera encore plus marquée en Martiniqie qui verra cette population doubler dans les mêmes délais. La fréquence des douleurs augmente avec l'âge mais elle est encore insuffisamment prise en charge. L'étude essaie d'établir si la différence de génération et de culture influe sur la relation médecin/malade, si le vécu du patient agit sur le ressenti de ses douleurs et la représentation des douleurs chez les personnes âgées. ETUDE : 49 personnes non démentes vivant en institution ont été interrogées sur leurs douleurs, leurs représentations, le vieillissement et la relation médecin/malade. RESULTATS : 78 % des personnes en institution souffrent de douleurs chroniques : 30 % d'entre elles s'associent à des douleurs aigues ; les patients ayant eu un passé douloureux décrivent plus de douleurs chroniques que les patients n'ayant pas eu de douleurs marquantes dans leur vie ; 61 % des personnes âgées pensent que vieillir est synonime de douleurs ; la majorité attendent du traitement une diminution des douleurs chroniques ; les personnes âgées font confiance aussi bien aux jeunes médecins qi'aux plus âgés ; 59 % des personnes en institution présentent une démence ou des troubles psychiatriques. CONCLUSION : La douleur n'est plus une fatalité mais reste trop fréquente chez la personne âgée. En Martinique, malgré un statut social préservé, un maintien à domicile plus long et des références culturelles particulières, les personnes en institution forment une population aux caractéristiques identiques aux autres pays.

In recent years, critical interest in francophone literature has become increasingly pronounced. In the case of the French Caribbean, the work of several writers (Aime Cesaire, Frantz Fanon, Edouard Glissant and Patrick Chamoiseau, for example) has gained international recognition, and has formed a vital part of more general debates on history, culture, language and identity in the post colonial world. The majority of such writers, however, have been male and, perhaps recalling the preference that France has always shown for the island, have come in large part from Martinique. Mapping a Tradition: Francophone Women's Writing from Guadeloupe aims to explore a different side of francophone Caribbean writing through the examination of selected novels by Jacqueline Manicom, Michele Lacrosil, Maryse Conde, Simone Schwarz-Bart and Dany Bebel-Gisler. Placing the work of these writers in the context of that of their better-known, male counterparts, this study argues that it has provided an important mode of intervention in, and disruption of, a literary tradition which has failed to address questions of sexual difference and has often excluded issues relating to French Caribbean women. At the same time, this study suggests that Guadeloupean women's writing of the last thirty years may he seen to constitute a 'tradition' in itself, replete with its own influences and inheritances. At once within, and outside the 'dominant' tradition, women's writing from Guadeloupe - and Martinique - has come to occupy a position at the forefront of contemporary efforts to expand and redefine a still-burgeoning corpus of literary and theoretical work.

Although the novel, V oyages el avantures de] aques Masse, caused some thing of a stir during the first half of the eighteenth century, its author, Simon Tyssot de Patot (1655-1738), remained largely unknown in his lifetime, and it is only in this century that he has been recognized as one of the countless soldiers in the vast army of philosophes that assaulted the bastions of religious, political and sodallife in Europe of the late seven 1 teenth and early eighteenth centuries. Tyssot was a Huguenot who lived most of his life in Holland where he pursued a career as professor of mathematics in the sodal and cultural 1 Tyssot and his work seem to have been first brought to the attention of modem writers by the German critics during their investigation of the type of desert island or robinsonade literature that preceded and followed Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. The earliest reference I have found occurs in A. Kippenberg, Robinson in Deutschland bis zur Insel Felsenburg (1713-43), Hanover, 1892, pp. 66-67. Tyssot's name and work appear to have been first linked with the development of socialism in A. Lichtenberger, Le Socialisme au XVIIIe siecle, Paris, 1895, p. 44. Tyssot's Voyages et avantures de]aques Masse was discussed for its literary merits in A. LeBreton, Le Roman au dix huitieme siecle, Paris, 1898. LeBreton did not know that Tyssot was the author.
