From this intensive working it resulted that defects in design and construction, and in adaptation to the end in view, were very forcibly impressed on both the work's manager and the engineer as well as upon the owner and fostered the Spirit of invention of new, and improvement of existing, plant, and, as there was plenty of money available, little hindrance was felt from this cause. Taking the foregoing remarks into consideration, it is not to be wondered at that the past year has been so little remarkable for new ideas about plant. The cost of repairs and maintenance is largely dependent on the design of the apparatus, and a balance must be struck between this and the saving in labour and efficiency before a proper decision can be arrived at as to the most economical installation. Naturally, the more elaborate and complicated designs are the more costly to instal and also to main tain, but in many cases simplicity and cheapness are synonymous with failure. It is a great mistake on the other hand to choose an appliance just because it is novel and mechanically attractive. When it is remembered that in some processes the capital charges and costs of depreciation make up about 40 or 50% of the net cost of the product, the value of perfected plant and high efficiency will be fully appreciated. Excerpt from Reports of the Progress of Applied Chemistry, 1921, Vol. 6 Owing probably to the general industrial depression, very little Of great interest has appeared during the past year, which seems to have been devoted chiefly to minor improvements in existing plant and to investigations having for their Object the collection of data which may serve as a basis for improving the design, working, and efficiency of various types of chemical plant. There is still room for a great deal of research in this direction and the joint action of the Association Of British Chemical Manufacturers and the British Chemical Plant Manufacturers' Association in forming a Committee to consider the standardisation of chemical plant will, it is hoped, lead to results of great benefit to the industry, not only by rendering various types of plant uniform in design and construction and facilitating output, but also - and this is perhaps more important in some respects - enabling broken parts to be replaced from stock. This would do away with many serious delays to the course of production due to the breakdown of machinery. A far quicker method is here given based on the use of titanous chloride. The method is given briefly in New Methods in Volu metric Analysis, by Knecht and Hibbert, where it is stated that in the presence of sulphuric acid titanous chloride is oxidised by perchlorates. Working details, however, are not given, and below is described a process fully worked out for this method.
