It becomes, however, our duty to advise you that, upon this occasion, at least one-third of the members of our local Bar will not be present. We regret that they will not be here to join in our deliberations, and to join us in your entertainment, but it is 'with pride that we say to you, that the cause of their absence is that, temporarily forsaking their private clients, they have adopted their country as their client, and have gone to answer the call to arms. (applause) In this respect, they are uphold ing one of the noblest traditions of the Bar, because history tells us that, in all of our wars, the legal profession, in proportion to its numbers, furnished more recruits to our armies than any other profession or vocation.
