Book Description
In recent years a number of child protection scandals have surfaced in which children—often from poor and marginalized communities—suffer violence, abuse, and social harm. In Children and Families, the contributors look at the impact of marketization on social work services in both Ireland and England in the context of such scandals. They argue that marketization has had a negative impact on social work policies and practices, reducing the quality and availability of services for vulnerable children and young people. Paul Michael Garrett is then joined by leading researchers from across the globe to examine evidence from a range of policy regimes that highlight marketization’s negative effects.

Understanding System Change in Child Protection and Welfare
Author: John Canavan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000478270
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 119
Book Description
This book provides an account of the experience of a multifaceted system-change programme to strengthen the capacity of Ireland’s statutory child protection and welfare agency in the areas of prevention, early intervention and family support. Many jurisdictions globally are involved in system change processes focused on increasing investment in services that seek to prevent children’s entry into child protection and welfare systems, through early intervention, greater support to families, and an increased emphasis on rights and participation. Based on a four-year in-depth study by a team of University-based researchers, this text adds to the emerging knowledge-base on developing, implementing and evaluating system change in child protection and welfare. Study methodological approaches were wide ranging and involved a number of key stakeholders including children, parents, social workers and social care workers, service managers, agency leaders and policy makers. Since the change process involved an agency-university partnership encompassing design, technical support and evaluation, the book also contributes to understandings of the potential and limits of such partnerships in the child protection and welfare field. Uniquely, the book gives voice to the experience of both agency personnel and academic in the accounts provided. It will be of interest to all scholars, students and practitioners in the areas of child protection and welfare.

OECD Public Governance Reviews Together for Children and Young People in Ireland Towards a New Governance Framework
Author: OECD
Publisher: OECD Publishing
ISBN: 926489165X
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 249
Book Description
Ireland has shown a strong commitment to addressing child poverty and improving outcomes for children and young people. Responding to the needs of children and young people, particularly those most vulnerable, requires integrated policies and services. This report is part of a joint project between the OECD and the European Commission to strengthen policy and governance arrangements for tackling child poverty and improving outcomes for children and young people based on a whole-of-government approach. The report assesses recent policy, institutional and legislative developments in Ireland and compares outcomes for children and young people with those in other EU and OECD countries. It finds that despite progress, Ireland still has room for improvement on child poverty reduction, and more can be done to address the trust gap between young people in Ireland and their government. The report recommends Ireland to adopt measures to enhance inter-departmental and inter-agency co-operation, strengthen evidence-informed approaches, reinforce policy monitoring tools, and improve accountability mechanisms. It also recommends measures to support the effective implementation of Young Ireland, the National Policy Framework for Children and Young People (2023-28), and to ensure policy coherence.
