Excerpt from The Mosaic Cosmogony Not Adverse to Modern Science It may here, too, be right to' mention, that al though, in speaking of miracles, he has adopted the terms employed by the sceptical writers themselves, yet that a miracle does not necessarily imply either a violation, or an interruption, or a suspension of any of the laws of nature. It is simply an occurrence inexplicable by those laws alone, as stated in the first of the lectures referred to at p. 38, and which was originally published in the year 1833. For ex ample - If we were to see a heavy body suspended in the air near the surface of the earth, Without any discoverable support, we should not for a moment suppose that the law of gravity was being violated, or interrupted, or suspended, but should reasonably conclude that some inexplicable power - inexplicable because supernatural - was in operation upon that particular body, and acting in a direction opposite to that of the still existing force of gravity - See Trench, Notes on the Miracles, pp. 14 - 18.
