Bojan Aleksov's study portrays the origins and the spreading of the Nazarenes - the first Protestant Serbs - in South Hungary and Serbia as an indicator of social change among the Serbian people, whose demands and needs the Orthodox Church had failed to meet. In order to account for the success of Nazarene missionaries, it also illuminates the strategies employed by Nazarenes in expanding and maintaining their communities which range from communalism, group mores and practices, internal economic organization of the Nazarene communities and their attitude towards economic change, and finally the appeal of the Nazarene faith and worship. Looking at the social, economic, cultural and historical motives of conversions to Nazarenes, it examines in depth the Nazarenes' challenge to the Serbian Orthodox Church and the latter's belated response in the form of the so-called re-Orthodoxization (in line with newly invented tradition of the Serbian version of Orthodox Christianity - Svetosavlje) and the development of the mass Bogomoljci movement with its implications for the development of the Serbian national self-identification observed in the changes of the notions of Church, religion and piety, which finally (during the interwar period) resulted in a discourse that combined and fused the nation and the Orthodox Church and closed the long-lasting gap between the Church and the Serbian people/nation.

In early modern times, religious affiliation was often communicated through bodily practices. Despite various attempts at definition, these practices remained extremely fluid and lent themselves to individual appropriation and to evasion of church and state control. Because bodily practices prompted much debate, they serve as a useful starting point for examining denominational divisions, allowing scholars to explore the actions of smaller and more radical divergent groups. Religion and Politics in Interwar Yugoslavia explores the interaction between religion, nationalism, and political modernity in the first half of the 20th century, taking the case of the Serbian Orthodox Church as an example. This book historicizes the widely held assumption that the bond between religion and nationalism in the Balkans is a natural one or that this bond has been historically inevitable. It tells a complex story of how East Orthodox Christianity came to be at the core of one version of Serbian nationalism by bringing together the themes of religion, nationalism, politics, state-building, secularization, and modernity. Maria Falina reconstructs how the ideological fusion between Serbian nationalism and East Orthodox Christianity was forged. The analysis emphasizes ideas and ideologies through a close reading of public discourses and historical narratives while paying attention to individual actors and their personal histories. The book argues that the particular political vision of the Serbian Orthodox Church emerged in reaction to and in interaction with the challenges posed by political modernity that were not unique to Yugoslavia. Although much of Protestant Reformation history focuses on movements in Germany, Switzerland, and France, during the 16th Century the Netherlands was the site of some of the earliest instances of pre-reformation religious dissent. During the 1520s, no "figurehead" led the movement in the Netherlands; instead six theological tracts by six individual scholars voiced religious dissent. These dissenting theological ideas were based on either Northern Renaissance or Biblical Humanist scholarship--most notably Erasmus--or the writing and monastic students of Martin Luther. These tracts emphasized the need for renewed biblical study; spiritual rather than literal interpretations of the Medieval Church's rituals; re-evaluation of the status quo; and a revised interpretation of the authority of the Bible. This period of inquiry and religious and social unrest was the foundation for impending changes in the Netherlands, and the rest of Europe. Using primary historical data from the trials of suspected heretics and the works of the aforementioned theologians, only one of which has appeared in English, Pre-Reformation Religious Dissent in the Netherlands, 1518-1530 is a comprehensive study of role of the Netherlands in the Protestant Reformation.
