Rescue, Relief, and Resistance: The Jewish Labor Committee's Anti-Nazi Operations, 1934-1945 is the English translation of Catherine Collomp's award-winning book on the Jewish Labor Committee (JLC). Formed in New York City in 1934 by the leaders of the Jewish Labor Movement, the JLC came to the forefront of American labor's reaction to Nazism and Anti-Semitism. Situated at the crossroads of several fields of inquiry--Jewish history, immigration and exile studies, American and international labor history, World War II in France and in Poland--the history of the JLC is by nature transnational. It brings to the fore the strength of ties between the Yiddish-speaking Jewish worlds across the globe. Rescue, Relief, and Resistance contains six chapters. Chapter 1 describes the political origin of the JLC, whose founders had been Bundist militants in the Russian empire before their emigration to the United States, and asserts its roots in the American Jewish Labor movement of the 1930s. Chapters 2 and 3 discuss how the JLC established formal links with the European non-communist labor movement, especially through the Labor and Socialist International and the International Federation of Trade Unions. Chapter 4 focuses on the approximately 1,500 European labor and socialist leaders and left-wing intellectuals, including their families, rescued from certain arrest and deportation by the Gestapo. Chapter 5 deals with the special relationship the JLC established with currents in the Resistance in France, partly financing its underground labor and socialist networks and operations. Chapter 6 is devoted to the JLC's support of Jews in Poland during the war: humanitarian relief for those in the occupied territory under Soviet domination and political and financial support of the combatants of the Warsaw ghetto in their last stand against annihilation by the Wermacht. The JLC has never commemorated its rescue operations and other political activities on behalf of opponents of Fascism and Nazism, nor its contributions to the reconstruction of Jewish life after the Holocaust. Historians to this day have not traced its history in a substantial way. Students and scholars of Holocaust and American studies will find this text vital to their continued studies.

Volume 7, The Holocaust: Selected Documents in Eighteen Volumes. The St. Louis Affair occurred a few months before the outbreak of World War II. Because of increased Nazi terror larger numbers of Jews had begun to emigrate. The Cuban Director of Immigration had sold many landing permits wholesale to the Hamburg America Line, which resold these permits to individual Jews. A shift in Cuban policies invalidated the permits, but the line failed to inform the passengers. Thus when over 900 passengers arrived on the St. Louis at Havana, they were prevented from disembarking and forced to return to Europe. For the moment, they were saved by the unselfish actions of France, Holland, Belgium and Great Britain, which permitted the emigrants to land in their respective territories. Many of the documents selected for this volume are devoted to the St. Louis Affair. Others deal with similar landing problems, the emigration of 5000 Jewish children and obstacles to Jewish emigration created by the Nazis. No Haven for the Oppressed is the most thorough and the most comprehensive analysis to be written to date on the United States policy toward Jewish refugees during World War II. Friedman draws upon many sources for his history, significantly upon papers which have only recently been opened to public scrutiny. These include State Department Records at the National Archives and papers relating to the Jewish refugee question at the Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park. Such documents serve as the foundation for this study, together with the papers of the American Friends Service Committee, of Rabbis Stephen Wise and Abba Silver, Senator Robert Wagner, Secretary Hull and Assistant Secretary of State Breckinridge Long, of the American Jewish Archives, the National Jewish Archives, and extensive interviews with persons intimately involved in the refugee question. Professor Friedman describes America's pre-war preoccupation with economic woes: immigrants, particularly Jewish immigrants, were viewed as competitors for scarce jobs. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, although personally sympathetic to the dilemma of Jews, was not willing to risk public and congressional support for his domestic programs by championing legislation or diplomacy to increase Jewish immigration. The court-packing scandal and the unsuccessful purge of Southern Democrats had left his popularity at an all-time low. Jewish leaders were equally unwilling to antagonize the American public by strong advocacy of the Jewish cause. They feared anti-Semitic backlash against American Jews and worried that their own "100 percent" loyalty to the nation might be questioned. Although he takes issue with authors who propose that anti-Semitism at the highest levels of the State Department was the major block to the rescue of the Jews, Friedman demonstrates that some officials continually thwarted rescue plans. He suggests that a disinclination to sully themselves in negotiations with the Nazis and a fear that any ransom would prolong the global conflict, caused the Allies to offer only token overtures to the Nazis on behalf of the Jews.

In addition to a number of items, such as the denial of a request for exemption from deportation by an eighty-seven year old Jew, the documents reproduced in this volume concentrate on German court cases. Foremost are cases of "racial pollution," as for example, the Katzenberger case in which a Jew was sentenced to death for alleged sexual relations with a gentile girl. Another case that demonstrates the degree to which the Nazi Ministry of Justice made anti-Semitic doctrine part of the judicial system is the "Jewish Mothermilk Case." A Jewish woman sold her milk to a German doctor. He in turn sold the milk to German mothers who could not themselves nurse their babies. When this case came before the court, it convicted the Jewish woman of fraud for misrepresenting her milk as fit for German infants.
