This study empirically examined (1) the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment, (2) the relationships between some job facets and job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and (3) the relationships between some personal charateristics and job satisfaction and organizational commitment among 85 nurses in Western Australia. The instruments used included the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS) and Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ). Factor analysis has supported the validity of the research constructs. Reliability analyses have shown that the reliabilities of the instruments ranged from 0.67 to 0.94. Correlational analyses have supported a positive relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Satisfaction with the job facets were correlated positively with overall job satisfaction and also organizational commitment, except for satisfaction with co-workers. Only age was correlated with job satisfaction and no correlation was found for other personal characteristics and organizational commitment. Analyses of variances with the facets of job satisfaction were also carried out for the personal characteristics. Older nurses were found to be more satisfied with their co-workers, growth and overall job satisfaction than their younger colleagues. Nurses with 'high school' qualifications are more satisfied with their job security than nurses with 'postgraduate' qualifications. No significant differences were found for marital status, number of children and age.

This study examines the relationship between employee attitudes towards training and organizational commitment among a sample of nurses in New Zealand and the United States. Results show that perceived access to training, training frequency, motivation to learn from training, benefits of training, and supervisory support for training were positively related to the affective and normative components of commitment. The military nurse serves in the dual role of nurse and officer creating a unique perspective of professional development. Previous studies have demonstrated a positive relationship between satisfaction with staff development activities and the selected variables of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and the intent to remain in an organization. The purpose of this study has been to explore these relationships in a military nurse population. Five questions were asked in this research. What is the perceived level of satisfaction with staff development activities among Air Force staff nurses at a Midwest Regional Medical Center? What is the level of organizational commitment of staff nurses at an Air Force Regional Medical Center? What is the level of overall job satisfaction among staff nurses at an Air Force Regional Medical Center? What is the level of intent to remain among Air Force staff nurses at a Midwest Regional Medical Center? What is the relationship between the perceived level of satisfaction with staff development activities and (a) organizational commitment, (b) overall work satisfaction, (c) intent to remain, and (d) selected demographic variables among Air Force staff nurses at a Midwest Regional Medical Center? The theoretical framework of this research is based on Herzberg's theory of motivation. Job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and the intent to remain with an organization are conceptualized as the intermediate variables linking the perception of staff development and nurse retention. During monthly nursing unit staff meetings at a Midwest regional Air Force medical center 50 staff nurses from three different inpatient units completed a questionnaire comprised of the Satisfaction with Educational Opportunity Scale, the Job Description Index, and the Intent to Remain Scale.
