Book Description
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not a significant relationship exists between the implementation of the Morristown-Hamblen High School East (MHHSE) Freshman Academy, student academic achievement, and the high school graduation rate at MHHSE. The testing variables included GPA, attendance, number of core course failures, number of discipline referrals, English I End-of-Course test scores, and graduation rate. Grouping variables included 8th grade (pretreatment) and 9th grade (posttreatment) groups, preacademy and postacademy groups, socioeconomic status, and gender. Ten faculty members of the MHHSE Freshman Academy were interviewed to ascertain their perceptions about the smaller learning community concept. The population of the study was limited to students enrolled in the MHHSE Freshman Academy (2004-2008) and students enrolled at MHHSE 2 years prior to the implementation of the academy (2002-2004). Paired-samples t-tests were used to make comparisons between the same students on 8th grade (pretreatment) and 9th grade (posttreatment) measures. Independentsamples t-tests were used to make additional comparisons between different groups of students categorized according to socioeconomic status and gender, as well as preacademy and postacademy groups. Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that the 9th grade transition year is a very difficult year for most students. Male students and those classified as economically disadvantaged develop additional risk factors during their freshmen year that might identify them as potential dropouts. The MHHSE Freshman Academy has had a positive effect on student academic performance and conduct as measured by the data analyses and teacher opinions.

Book Description
"This study was completed to find if there is a correlation between high school attendance rates and graduation rates. Attendance in high school is imperative for student success, academic achievement and graduation. Research has shown that students that do not graduate from high school encounter numerous socioeconomic disadvantages over a lifetime, including decreased wages, poor health, and greater criminal activity (Fall & Roberts, 2012). For this study, archived data was collected from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website. The raw data on attendance rates and graduation rates from the 2002 through 2013 were collected. This study shows that a positive correlation relationship exists between high school attendance and graduation in both large school and small schools."--portion of abstract

Book Description
Every state in America has enacted compulsory school attendance laws, but truancy and dropout continue to plague school systems. Poor attendance is an attribute of the at-risk student and jeopardizes their academic success. Research links truancy and dropout to deviant behavior which can include drug use, earlier sexual activity, and criminal behavior. School systems seeking intervention methods to disrupt this cycle should employ what the research states as a holistic approach to improving attendance in at-risk students. A holistic approach includes having high-interest after school programming that has the potential for long term mentoring opportunities, parental involvement, and community participation. These efforts seek to reengage the at-risk student into the school’s programming and make them feel connected to the school again. The following project seeks to incorporate all of these elements by designing and implementing a fishing club targeted for at-risk junior high school students at Whittemore-Prescott Are School District.

Book Description
In Absent from School, Gottfried and Hutt offer a comprehensive and timely resource for educators and policy makers seeking to understand the scope, impact, and causes of chronic student absenteeism. The editors present a series of studies by leading researchers from a variety of disciplines that address which students are missing school and why, what roles schools themselves play in contributing to or offsetting patterns of absenteeism, and ways to assess student attendance for purposes of school accountability. The contributors examine school-based initiatives that focus on a range of issues, including transportation, student health, discipline policies, and protections for immigrant students, as well as interventions intended to improve student attendance. Only in the past two or three years has chronic absenteeism become the focus of attention among policy makers, civil rights advocates, and educators. Absent from School provides the first critical, systematic look at research that can inform and guide those who are working to ensure that every child is in school and learning every day.
