Book Description
The purpose of the report is to clarify the legal possibilities of restricting export of certain types of used EEE due to e.g. content of hazardous substances, energy consumption and/or limited market value. The focus is current environmental regulation and trade regulation which have been evaluated in order to identify if they can serve as the legal basis for setting restrictions on export. The analysis concentrates on the legal framework of trade within the rules of the internal market in the EU and the legal concept of the WTO that regulates trade between countries worldwide. The report concludes that waste regulation has very limited possibilities in regards to restricting export of used EEE. In regards to trade restrictions, it cannot be ruled out that such restrictions can be adopted in accordance with the rules of the internal market in the EU and the legal concept of WTO. [Elib].

Book Description
Increasingly, U.S. consumers are recycling their old electronics to prevent the environmental harm that can come from disposal. But, some U.S. companies are exporting these items to developing countries, where unsafe recycling practices can cause health and environmental problems. To prevent this practice, since Jan. 2007, the EPA began regulating the export of cathode ray tubes (CRT) under its CRT rule, which requires companies to notify EPA before exporting CRTs. This report examined: (1) the fate of exported used electronics; (2) the effectiveness of regulatory controls over the export of these devices; and (3) options to strengthen federal regulation of exported used electronics. Includes recommendations. Illustrations.

Book Description
ICT Innovations for Sustainability is an investigation of how information and communication technology can contribute to sustainable development. It presents clear definitions of sustainability, suggesting conceptual frameworks for the positive and negative effects of ICT on sustainable development. It reviews methods of assessing the direct and indirect impact of ICT systems on energy and materials demand, and examines the results of such assessments. In addition, it investigates ICT-based approaches to supporting sustainable patterns of production and consumption, analyzing them at various levels of abstraction – from end-user devices, Internet infrastructure, user behavior, and social practices to macro-economic indicators. Combining approaches from Computer Science, Information Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, Economics, and Environmental Sciences, the book presents a new, holistic perspective on ICT for Sustainability (ICT4S). It is an indispensable resource for anyone working in the area of ICT for Energy Efficiency, Life Cycle Assessment of ICT, Green IT, Green Information Systems, Environmental Informatics, Energy Informatics, Sustainable HCI, or Computational Sustainability.

Book Description
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations (S.I. 2006/3289, ISBN 9780110754796) introduce a new legal framework for the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment by householders and non-household users. This guidance document explains the requirements of the WEEE Regulations and how they affect NHS trusts as users of non-household equipment. Issues covered include: the objectives and scope of the Regulations; key dates and deadlines; links between procurement and disposal; the need to track EEE purchases made at a department/ward level; considerations involved in accepting end-of-life responsibility from producers in new procurement; and links with other waste management legislation.
