MHC Class-I Loss and Cancer Immune Escape
Author: Federico Garrido
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030178641
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 109
Book Description
This book is about the escape strategies used by cancer cells to avoid the immune response of the host. The main characters of this story are the “Antigen Presenting Molecules” and the “T Lymphocytes”. The former are known as the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC): the H-2 and the HLA molecules. The latter are a subgroup of white cells travelling all over our body which are capable to distinguish between “self and non self”. Readers will know from the inside about the history of the HLA genetic system and will discover how T lymphocytes recognize and destroy cancer cells. One of the key important questions is: Why tumors arise, develop and metastasize? This book tries to answer this question and will explain how cancer cells become invisible to killer T lymphocytes. The loss of the HLA molecules is a major player in this tumor escape mechanism. Cancer immunotherapy is aimed at stimulating T lymphocytes to destroy tumor cells. However, the clinical response rate is not as high as expected. The molecular mechanisms responsible for MHC/HLA antigen loss play a crucial role in this resistance to immunotherapy. This immune escape mechanism will be discussed in different types of tumors: lung, prostate, bladder and breast...ect. as well as melanoma and lymphoma. This book will be useful to Oncologists, Pathologists and Immunologist that will enter this fascinating area of research. It will be also interesting for biologist, doctoral students and medical residents interested in “Tumor Immunology”.

Diagnosing and Treating Adult Cancers and Associated Impairments
Author: National Academies Of Sciences Engineeri
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 9780309684002
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages :
Book Description
Cancer is the second leading cause of death among adults in the United States after heart disease. However, improvements in cancer treatment and earlier detection are leading to growing numbers of cancer survivors. As the number of cancer survivors grows, there is increased interest in how cancer and its treatments may affect a person's ability to work, whether the person has maintained employment throughout the treatment or is returning to work at a previous, current, or new place of employment. Cancer-related impairments and resulting functional limitations may or may not lead to disability as defined by the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA), however, adults surviving cancer who are unable to work because of cancer-related impairments and functional limitations may apply for disability benefits from SSA. At the request of SSA, Diagnosing and Treating Adult Cancers and Associated Impairments provides background information on breast cancer, lung cancer, and selected other cancers to assist SSA in its review of the listing of impairments for disability assessments. This report addresses several specific topics, including determining the latest standards of care as well as new technologies for understanding disease processes, treatment modalities, and the effect of cancer on a person's health and functioning, in order to inform SSA's evaluation of disability claims for adults with cancer.

Intracranial Germ Cell Tumors
Author: Yutaka Sawamura
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 370916821X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 462
Book Description
Intracranial germ cell tumors are a group of uncommon neoplasms of the central nervous system. The clinical features and natural history of these lesions are quite unique and variable. While intracranial germ cell tumors have been a fascination to neurooncologists for decades, the relatively small number of patients seen in any single institution has hampered the important clinical investigation that is so needed. This text is complete with detailed information concerning the epidemiology, pathology, oncological biology, clinical findings, radiology, and treatment options including surgical strategy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy for this heterogeneous group of neoplasms. The ongoing clinical trials concerning the optimization of therapy are efficiently summarized. An important final segment addresses the late sequelae of therapy which is of great significance since the majority suffering from these tumors are young patients. This first and only book on intracranial germ cell tumors includes excellent and comprehensive data sheets, illustrations, and radiograms. It provides a detailed and outstanding reference source for physicians taking care of patients with intracranial germ cell tumors, and will be a very welcome edition to their reference libraries.

Book Description
This publication aims to give comprehensive information on the methods of gamma knife radiosurgery and the results of treatment of the most frequent diagnoses using radiosurgery. A summarisation of existing knowledge and results obtained in gamma knife radiosurgery world-wide is based on experience with treatment of more than 13,500 patients over 20 years at Na Homolce Hospital, Prague. Besides detailing the basic data of Leksell gamma knife radiosurgery, this book also provides thorough technical description of former and existing gamma knife models, basic physics principles of gamma knife radiosurgery, calibration and quality assurance as well as standardised treatment procedures. The book is primarily intended for physicians, who, together with the patient decide on the most appropriate methods of treatment for each diagnosis. The publication can be also helpful to medical physicists who are involved in gamma knife radiosurgery and responsible for its calibration and quality assurance. Finally, it is also intended for patients who are looking for, if necessary, more comprehensive information on the radiosurgical treatment method for tumours and other brain disorders.
