Does social science matter? Yes. Why does social science matter? It provides humans with knowledge, in form of research and theory, that allows us to understand our surroundings and how the social realm works. In addition to the theoretical and empirical understanding of the social realm, social science allows us to anticipate and shape aspects of future social developments and outcomes – e.g., demography and human security and social unrests; or actions and potential reactions between and among individuals, state-actors and non-state actors and their implication on the social realm. The book is written for active learners – those keen on cutting their own path through the complex and at times hardly comprehensible world of THEORY in International Relations. To aid this process as much as possible, this book employs the didactical and methodical concept of integrating teaching and self-study. The criteria for structured learning about IR theory will be derived from an extensive discussion of the questions and problems of philosophy of science (Part 1).
