Book Description
To get somewhere it is useful to know where you are going. This can be especially difficult for people struggling with issues of addiction, compulsion, physical or mental illness. In this simple yet effective three-part program, best-selling author Charles Whitfield helps readers chart their own treatment plan and find a way out of the often confusing vortex of recovery work. Through illustrative charts and graphics he shows readers how to write their own recovery plan, including how to identify core issues and how to integrate those issues into a personalized plan. Stage one helps readers identify the illness or condition that plagues them and explains how recovery truly is within reach of those who participate in a full recovery program. Stage two explains how healing requires the reader to consider their adult child of trauma issues, such as co-dependence. It describes the way out of the pain and confusion-learning self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-responsibility and self-reflection. Stage three addresses more keys to success including having a healthy and nourishing spirituality and learning to live in the present moment, no longer burdened by the past or fearing the future. My Recovery Plan is an empowering book; it will give readers hope and instill the knowledge that they can, indeed, recover.

Book Description
Narratives of Recovery from Mental Illness presents research that challenges the prevailing view that recovery from ‘mental illness’ must take place within the boundaries of traditional mental health services. While Watts and Higgins accept that medical treatment may be a vital start to some people’s recovery, they argue that mental health problems can also be resolved through everyday social interactions, and through peer and community support. Using a narrative approach, this book presents detailed recovery stories of 26 people who received various diagnoses of ‘mental illness’ and were involved in a mutual help group known as ‘GROW’. Drawing on an in-depth analysis of each story, chapters offer new understandings of the journey into mental distress and a progressive entrapment through a combination of events, feelings, thoughts and relationships. The book also discusses the process of ongoing personal liberation and healing which assists recovery, and suggests that friendship, social involvement, compassion, and nurturing processes of change all play key factors in improved mental well-being. This book provides an alternative way of looking at ‘mental illness’ and demonstrates many unexplored avenues and paths to recovery that need to be considered. As such, it will be of interest to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work and occupational therapy, as well as to service providers, policymakers and peer support organisations. The narratives of recovery within the book should also be a source of hope to people struggling with ‘mental illness’ and emotional distress

Book Description
Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services. It offers a set of conclusions and recommendations about successful stigma change strategies and the research needed to inform and evaluate these efforts in the United States.

Book Description
Through a synthesis of a broader inter-disciplinary literature in the field of disaster studies, organisation theory and management, and an in-depth case study this book provides an analytical framework for organising post-disaster reconstruction programmes which aim to reduce future disaster risks and achieve other objectives. It explores the role of organisational design and management on approaching and achieving the objectives of the reconstruction programme in Iran after the 2003 Bam earthquake. The housing reconstruction programme in Bam was a complex case, offering various learning opportunities to understand organising reconstruction processes especially in urban areas. The case study research explores how the urban housing reconstruction programme system was formed purposefully towards the delivery of the stated objectives and created an innovative housing process throughout the urban area. It identifies consistencies and inconsistencies among the influential organisational attributes of the programme delivery system formation. The system evolved through corrective adjustments (either formally or informally) during its implementation to reflect unfolding consequences of inconsistencies in initial formation and emerging contextual issues in the field.

Book Description
My book is of growing, maturing and trying to understand the facts of life without anyone telling you about it. Unfortunately learning and understanding what sex is about at the age of three years of age. Learning on your own, coping the best way you can own with the dynamics of dysfunctionality within your own family. Learning how to cope, and take care of yourself when there is no one there to help you. Praying, hoping that you can grow up, and move out and be thankful that you weren’t beaten to death. And thanking God that you have one more chance at life. The road to recovery truly begins when that family’s loyalty tempered with violence, physical, mental, corporal abuse, drinking, drugs and control. The violence that we all suffered at the hands of our parents. No reason or responsibility, with no sense of love or security, just only pain to each individual. Your loyalty to yourself comes first. Trust me when I say this. You are not alone. Do not ever be ashamed of your past do not be afraid of the future or what it may bring. You are a part of your future, and what tools you use to make it work for you.
