Just as the acoustic telegraph (telephone) replaced the electric telegraph, the incandescent lamp replaced gas lighting, wireless methods superseded wired technologies; the turbines eventual replacement of the horse, the aircraft the train, the email the mailed letter to name just a few changes in our recent history. In all cases these changes were not overnight phenomena but ones that took time. Slowly the practitioners changed, the users switched and the infrastructure transitioned and then the process repeated itself. The content and technology industries affected by copyright and its exceptions, and in some cases balancing the two, have become increasingly important as sources of economic growth, relatively high-paying jobs, and exports.
