Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 33: January 1959 In Paul Leicester Ford's edition Of The Works of Thomas Jefferson (volume VI, page 23) there may be found a letter containing the following intriguing words: Mr. Henry at the present session made an unsuccessful attempt to get a portion of the revenues of Wm. Mary transferred to hampden-sydney. The letter dated December 14, 1789, and addressed to William Short, shows to what lengths the early trustees went in order to insure the stability of the youthful institution! Our current efforts to procure funds are strenuous, but we assure our good friends in Williamsburg that we no longer have designs on them. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 26: June 1952 While the President of the college and the great majority Of the faculty are Presbyterians, there are also members Of other denominations and this has been the case ever since the college was founded. NO effort is ever made to induce a student to leave the church in which he has been reared. W believe that if Samuel Stanhope Smith, great Presby terian devine, educator, and man of affairs that he was, were to return to hampden-sydney, he would be gratified to see that this college in whose founding he had so great a part has kept faith with his pronouncement as to the catholic plan of the institution made before its doors were Open. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 17: January, 1943 The Fund was headed up this year by that loyal and energetic Alumnus, Dr. H. Wallace Blanton, of Richmond, and while much was confidently expected of him, the result surpassed those expectations. Approximately has been secured in cash or pledges coming from about 800 contributors as against something in excess of from 850 contributors last year. The fact that the number of contributors is a little less than that of last year is easily explained in that so many of our younger Alumni are in the armed forces and scattered over both hemispheres and were unable to be reached.
